62. i. RICHARD16 MELTON, b. Abt. 1732; d. Aft. 1769, Albemarle County, Va.

Englishmen began the permanent settlement of this region of North Carolina about 1650. Perquimans county was formed in 1668 as a precinct of the much larger County of Albemarle, and is home to the Newbold-White House. Built in 1730, the Newbold-White House is the oldest brick structure in the state.

From gathering food to building homes and surviving in the wilderness, the early settlers had little time for formal religion. In 1672, two missionaries by the names of Edmundson and George Fox came to the Carolinas and spoke about religion. These gentlemen were of the "Society of Friends," otherwise known as Quakers. In what later became Hertford, at the house of Henry Phelps, the first religious meeting was held for the people living near the Perquimans River. Edmundson said, "(Phelps' neighbors) had little or no Religion, for they came, and sat down in the Meeting smoking their Pipes."

Later, Edmundson returned for eighteen days and spoke to the governor, precinct officials, and a number of the men and women in Perquimans and Pasquotank precincts, many of whom became Quakers. They soon organized the first church in North Carolina, which remained the colony's only organized religious body until 1701.

916. Joseph Neville Sr ^

Because of my research on the Neville family, in the spring of 1997 I started a Neville E-Mail List sponsored with Indiana University and later through Rootsweb. This list really took off with lots of Neville researchers coming together to share ideas and information. Later that year I also became the founding president of the Neville Heritage Society which publishes the Neville Heritage Review and has a very active presence on the World Wide Web and other places as far as genealogy research on the Neville family in North America and abroad. I have two links to the Neville family--one to the American progenitor John Neville who immigrated to Maryland on the Ark and the Dove in 1634; and a second link through the Harris family back to the English Nevilles who intermarried with the Royal Family and was very active in the Wars of the Roses.

According to her, the material compiled by Boogher is reasonably accurate from JosephNeville forward (b. 1693, according to Booger, but ca. 1707 is closeraccording to statement by Joseph in 1792 when he said he was 85 [Sparacio,Land Causes Prince William County , VA 1790-93, p. 129]), but most of Joseph'schildren can't be proven. Booger apparently assumed they were Joseph'sbecause of their ages and residence, but he gave no sources, so there is noway of knowing for sure how he arrived at his conclusions. There was no
will for Joseph Nevill. In fact, when she checked records in
Fauquier/PrinceWilliam County , she did not find Benjamin or Richard Nevill at all. Instead, she found Benjamin NEWELL who mentioned in his will a brother Richard and asister Ann. A deed can be used to prove that Joseph had a son George. IfJoseph was the same Joseph Nevill found in Gloucester, he also had a sonJoseph baptized in Abingdon Parish. There is no proof, presently, thatJoseph had sons John, James, and William (see further information aboutWilliam below) or a daughter Ann. A marriage bond states that he gaveconsent for Mary Neville to marry Richard Jackman, so she must have beenJoseph's daughter. While Booger may have been a competent researcher in
his
day, he did not have all the resources available today.
With regard to information about descendants of the immigrant John Nevill
ofMD, she states many published works have been based on research by WilliamF. Boogher. She goes on to say that some early Maryland and VA sources were
citedby Booger, including a critical one that is referenced incorrectly or doesnot exist. (I do not have the information on which source this is- Jan.)
Itwas Booger who probably first mentioned a link with Isle of Wight County,
VANevilles. No document has yet been found that links the early Nevillesettlers of Prince William County , VA, with Isle of Wight Nevilles. (Lookcarefully at copies of the original documents Booger cited to see how he
may
have misread or misinterpreted information.)
David A. Avant, Jr., another respected genealogist (see Southern Colonial
Families, Vol. 3, p. 445), states the following:
"That the NEVILLE name was an illustrious one in England for centuries iswell documented. That one John Nevil came to the Maryland shore in the Arkand the Dove in 1635 and left numerous progeny is also a matter of record. However, it yet remains to be proved and documented that Capt. WilliamNeville, Revolutionary soldier, who married Winefred Oldham and livedsuccessively in Virginia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. had asanguine relationship with any of the above named Nevilles. He may wellhave been connected in some way to these earlier Nevilles, but as yet we do
NOT have the needful solid documentation.
"The well-known NEVILLE society has kindly furnished some records and someleads to other records for which we are apreciative. However, severalwidely accepted Neville family histories and genealogies, published somedecades ago, simply do not withstand the critical scrutiny demanded of
today's genealogical research."
It does seem to me that it is probable that all the above Nevilles may havebeen connected, but more research is needed to document the connections.Perhaps, if we can find where Booger's papers are housed, we can find
betterinformation on his sources. Questions like yours keep this group
interesting.

I just ran into (perhaps again) astatement published in the Spencer Brown book where he states "JosephNeville died in 1790 at the home of his "son", Joseph Neville Jr. inMoorefield, Hampshire County Virginia" Do you have any "proof" that JosephSr. died at your ancestor Josephs house? If so, then I can move on as Iuse your ancestors letters to Cuthbert Bullitt to prove my Presley, sonof my John, your Joseph's brother. Ren and Judy Neville 10/7/97

Presley Neville", andthe two depositions indicating the age of Joseph Nevill, Sr. The seconddeposition reference -- Land Cause Book, pge 455, Court of May 1793 (p129 in published text) taken in Hardy County Colo. Joseph Neavills house,July 30th 1792 -- stating Joseph's age as 85. Is this also an extract bythe Sparacios, or is this the actual language used by the person takingthe deposition two years after the first deposition but sayingessentially the same thing? Perhaps even an abstract by someone otherthat the Sparacios would at least represent a second opinion on therelationship between Joseph Sr. and Thomas Dodson Jr. If it is not anabstract, which always causes some concern that the abstractor'spersonal and possibly erronious opinion was interjected into the quote, should not the second deposition should be taken at face value? In anyevent, the second deposition adds two years to the my previous latestknown record of Joseph's age. Also, since the second deposition wastaken at Joseph Nevill Jr's house, I would consider it very probable thatthe old gentleman had moved into his son's house and probably died there.

__________________________________________Joseph Neville, Sr. was born in Gloucester County VA in 1707, andmarried there his cousin Ann Bohannon about 1729. SoJUND says seven ofJoseph and Ann's nine children were born in Abbington Parish, GloucesterCo. Virginia" This would seem to suggest that Joseph did not actually movehis family to Caroline County until 1739 if their children's ages arecorrect. Joseph was an inn-keeper. He had a license for an ordinaryin Fredricksburg, Caroline County , Maryland in 1735 which apparently nevergot off the ground, but he again gained a license in 1738-40. Thisordinary did not seem to have been particularly profitable, and wasdefinitely considered inferior to the one operated only about 10 miles
away by his brother George Neville.

Notes for JOSEPH NEVILLE:In 1745 settled with his family in Prince William County, as
appears by deedrecorded in (liber M, folio 95), from Thomas Walker for 200/6 acres of
land, which sale was confirmed to the said Joseph Neville Oct. term of court,
1745,page 302 of court docket. It appears from this deed that he was then
livingin Hamilton parish, Pince William county. As he was not a free-holder in
1741it is positively certain that he did not settle in Prince William until
latein 1744-1745. From this date, 1745 to 1760, Joseph Neville, Sr. is a
frequentplaintiff, defendat and witness in the courts of Prince William and is
tyledJoseph Neville, Sr., Gentleman. His residence was situated on the road ornear the road leading to Ashby's Gap, where he kept a licensed ordinary, asearly as 1752. He is said to have served as an officer in the French andIndian war in Prince William county, but of this the writer has not foundsufficient proof to say wether or not it was Joseph Sr. or his son Joseph, later known as Gen. Joseph. He is believed to have married in Abington andGlouceaster Parish in the fall of 1730, as his eldest child John was bornin1731. The date of the death of Joseph Neville, Sr. or that of his wife
isnot known; nor can it be definitely ascertained, owing to the partialdestruction of the deed, wiil, and fiduciary account books of Price WilliamCo., and all of the court order books except from 1752 to 1756. It is,however, reasonably certain that he died about 1766 in Prince William, County ,
asin this year his son George applied for a license to keep an ordinary in
hisstead; and the name of his father Joseph Neville, Sr. no longer apears ofrecord, in the deeds of court order books. The children of Joseph Neville,Sr. and Ann his wife nee Bohannan, were eight of whom we have record.

In 1745, Joseph Neville and Ann Bohannan ...settled with their family in Prince William County , as appears by deed recorded in "Liber MFolio 95, from Thomas Walker for 206 acres of land, which sale wasconfirmed to the said Joseph Neville, October term of court, 1745." Thiswas the farm at the head of Cedar Run, later called Rockingham, on whichhe again established an ordinary -- which he later gave to his son,George, by Deed of Gift in 1762 (Deed Book 1 page 430). John Oldham with wife Mary, whose will was probated 10 Sept. 1753,> Northumberland County , VA was the father of Winneford who married William> Neville. You can find an abstract of his will in "Northumberland County , VA> Wills and Administrations 1750-1770" by James F. Lewis & J. Motley> Booker, p33. He mentions his wife Mary and seven children: Rawleigh,> Richard, John, George, Winnefred, Anna, Mary and one not born. He gave to> his son Rawleigh the land he bought of his brother George Oldham. He> names wife Mary Oldham, brother George Oldham & son Rawleigh Oldham

Shirley Wilcox's post should hopefully square away the situation. Forthe record, I just want to point out a few of the inconsistencies inShepherd Brown's book. As I mentioned on page 139, he states that JohnOldham and wife Mary had Raleigh, Richard, John, George, Winifred, Annand Mary. According to Shirley, this is in agreement with her records. He then states that their daughter (John and Mary's) Winifred marriedJohn Neville, which is evidently wrong, she married William Neville,Shirley Wilcox's ancestor. On page 149, he then states that JohnNeville (same John as above) married Winefred Oldham, the daughter ofJohn Oldham and Ann Conway, which is correct also (I think). I dontbelieve John Neville married both Winifreds! Looks like we have twoWinifreds by two John's, and not one by John and the other by George hisbrother, so as Shirley points out, these two Winifred's do "not" appearto be first cousins as probably stated by SOJND. Shirley also points outthat much is unproven, (so what else is new). Additionally, ShepherdBrown states on page 139 that George Oldham's (this would be the brotherto the above John Oldham who married "Mary") will was filed February 13,1758 and it named sons William and George and daughters Jane, Elizabethand Winifred Oldham, who married William Neville (Shirleys ancestor, brother to John, my ancestor) This evidently is not correct as to thisWinifred. God I hate to ask this, but can anyone give me the name ofWinifred Nevill's husband, that is the Winefred Neville, daugher ofGeorge (if he had a daughter Winefred) and not the two Johns, or hasanyone ever seen the will of George Oldham dated 4-10-1755 and possiblyof record in Northumberland County , VA Order Book 1753-1756 on page 11.note: Shepherd Brown uses this reference to the will. I got anotherstupid question. If the will was filed 2-13-1758, how does it get in theNorthumberland Order Book for 1753-1756? Oh well.......... Ren Neville
