I descend from Thomas Owen thru his daughter, Catherine, who married Benoni Griffith. I was recently sent
information on Thomas Owen that he may have come from Rhywillam, Carmarthenshire, Wales or Redstone,
Pembrokeshire, Wales. They were early members of the Baptist Church of the Great Valley in Devon, Pa.
They were received by the church in 1710/11 so they probably came to this country shortly before that.
816. Henry Ballinger ^
Henry was a Quaker
Ballingers known to be of French extraction. Name originally De La Ballinger. Of the religious sect of Huguenots and driven out of country due to religious persecution of 1625 to 1700. Some came to America directly, but this line went to England thru Holland and settled in Benninghamshire. Here William Penn was the leader of the Quaker movement and the Ballingers united with them. Henry emmigrated to America in 1678 and united with the Burlington Meeting (as the Quakers termed their churches) at Burlington, NJ. William Penn had previously purchased this county as am asylum for the persecuted and came in person in 1677 to make America his permanent home. Henry Ballinger met and knew William Penn.
signed an agreement as member of Quaker House of Representatives to uphold the King. Appointed specal tax collector for Evesham in May 1701.

From the best research I have found, Henry Ballinger in Burlington, 1677, was not of French Huguenot descent. He was a Quaker who lived in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England where Ballengers are found before 1400.Posted by EdwardG on August 12, 1999 at 18:55:19:
I've seen a great deal of speculation, but very few documented specifics ref the Huguenot connection of Henry Ballinger (born c. 1660). In "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America," Emma Barrett Reeves quotes others to the effect that Henry, himself, might have migrated from France to England and then to New Jersey. Others have suggested that an ancestor of Henry's might have come from France to England and established the family in Nailsworth. I don't find the theory that Henry, himself, was the Henri who is supposed to have come from France. If he was born c. 1660, he was only 17 years old when he boarded "The Kent" to come to America, and he was a
practicing Quaker. Furthermore, the timing makes no sense in relation to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1886. It was that revocation that brought about the renewed prosecution of Huguenots in France which triggered their exodus. By the time this happened, Henry was already in America. That would leave us with the possibility that some ancestor of Henry's came to England, perhaps in the middle or the end of the 16th century before the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes. But all this is speculation. Is there ANYONE out there who has seen any
documentation of the Huguenot roots of the clan?Re: Henry Ballinger's parents?Posted by: Marta Bauer HarrisDate: January 30, 1999 at 19:24:47In Reply to: Henry Ballinger's parents? by Brent Petersonof 420
According to the Preface of "Three Centuries of Ballingers in America," Henry Ballinger was the son of Aubrey, son of William and Elizabeth (Harris) Ballinger.http://www.burlco.lib.nj.us/county/history/earliest.html

County, MO 1875-1951):
Henry, Born in Benningham England, moved to the county of
Glouchestershire where, as a young man, he united with the Quakers and
shortly thereafter emigrated to America.
Ballingers are known to be of French extraction; the name is French and
was originally De La Ballinger as used in France. Evidence of tradition
prove that in France they were of the religious sect of Huguenots and
were driven out of the country during the religious persecution of 1625
to 1700; some no doubt came to America, but the line of our descent went
to England via Holland and settled in Benninghamshire. This was the time
when William Penn was leader of the great Quaker movement and here the
Ballingers became united with them and continued in that faith for 200
years or more, and we find many still adhering to that church.
About the year 1660 a Henry Ballinger was born in Benningham, and moved
to Glouchesteshire where we find him united with the Nailsworth Meeting
of Quakers, and from which place he emigrated to America in 1678 and
united with the Burlington Meeting (as the Quakers termed their churches)
at Burlington, New Jersey.
William Penn had previously purchased much of this county and also
received a large grant of land in Pennsylvania. It seems quite possible
that Henry was well acquainted with William Penn before Penn settled
permanently in Philadelphia.
Henry, Joseph's father bought 1200 acres of land in Salem County, New
Jersey. In 1710, he sold it to three of his sons, Joseph, Josiah and
Henry. Joseph's share was 340 acres for which he paid his father 100
pounds (Salem, NJ Deeds). At the time all three sons were single and
they set out into the world to make their fortunes.
Barbara: There's quite a bit more about Henry in England where he joined
the Nailsworth Meeting of Quakers in Glouchestershire; his arrival in
America in 1678 on the "Kent"; record of his marriage referenced.

"George Elkinton, the progenitor of the family in New Jersey and Philadelphia, arrived from Millington, England on the 'Kent' in 1677. He was a blacksmith and came over as an indentured servant to Dr. Daniel Wills to whom he was bound for four years. On 12th month 22nd, 1681 a tract containing 300 acres was surveyed for Daniel Wills, Jr. and George Elkinton on the northern side of Rancocas Creek. 100 acres of this farm was given to George Elkinton for his four years of faithful service. This farm was located on Mill Creek in the neighborhood of the village of Rancocas. In 1683, George Elkinton married Mary Bingham, who died within a few years leaving no issue. He married Mary Core, a widow, in 1688. Their children were Joseph, George, Joshua, Thomas, Mary, and
Elizabeth. Joshua died in infancy and as Joseph's children were all girls, those bearing the name Elkinton trace their descent either to George or Thomas."

Of the numerous differences between County life today and that of 250 years ago, perhaps most pronounced of all is the present dependence on wheeled vehicles and roads as contrasted to ancestral dependence on boats - ranging all the way from the sailing ships of the colonizers to the skiff, pinnace or wherry of the early inhabitant.
The rivers and the numerous creeks of the County are assets today, but in a very different way than in the distant beginnings. The waterways were a principal factor in the early and successful seating of the County of Burlington, being vital at the time to trade, travel and provincial existence.
Consequently the earliest homes and the earliest settlements were on the waterways. Burlington, thriving at its river location, was the port of entry. Various of its early inhabitants moved on to establish forms in the fertile valleys, being generally careful to choose creek-valleys where a landing and a waterway insured easy transport to Burlington or Philadelphia.
Thus in the late 1600's the plantation village of Rancocas was surrounded by the farms of the Harding, Elkinton, Powell and Stokes families, along with the lands of the elder John Woolman, grandfather of the journalist, and of Dr. Daniel Wills who was the earliest of the County's physicians. Across the stream were the Borton, Hollinshead, Hackney, and Hooton families.http://mlug.missouri.edu/~wbishop/friendsbishopgenealogy/newjersey/njsrc001.php3
