882. Peter Silvester, born 12 Jan 1713/14 in Scituate, Plymouth, MA; died 12 Feb 1801 in Leicester, Worchester, MA. He was the son of 1764. Peter Silvester and 1765. Mary Torrey. He married 883. Deborah Torrey 26 Feb 1750/51.

883. Deborah Torrey, born Abt. 1729 in Leicester, Worchester, MA; died Unknown.

Child of Peter Silvester and Deborah Torrey is:
441 i. Deborah Silvester, born 30 Oct 1751 in Leicester, Worchester, MA; died 17 Oct 1791; married Samuel Sargent 12 Jan 1772.

431. Deborah Torrey ^

He was 40 years old...poss 2nd marriage for him...and maybe her too.

Your questions on whether you are correct, or wrong, can be answered under these two publications. I know that the LDS centers have one of the books on microfilm. It is The Torrey Families and Their Children in American Vol. I 1924 by F. Torrey. The other is Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John 1630 Volume 7. I have verified some of the births deaths and marriages against vital records of Marshfield, Scituate and other towns to assume that the work is somewhat good.

Surnames that I found in your tree were Silvester, Torrey, Ripley, Rawlins, Richards and Hatch. You have two children of Richard Silvester whom you are descended from. You are not descended from William Torrey, but from his brother James, and his wife Ann Hatch. Your two Torrey connections come from brothers, the sons of James. As you know the wife of Richard Silvester is in question. We know that her name is Naomi, but do not know her surname. She could be a Torrey, but without proof, we will never know. You have two possible, three probable surnames that we do not know of the spouses. I do not know if Sarah Mendall is correct. One researcher has Mrs. Isabel ( ? ) Witherell, the former wife of Samuel Witherell.

NOTES from James A. Willhite research: John Caffey - 1729 -- Letter of Feb. 13, 1989, from Betty Earl
(Betty has the following note on John Caffey's parents that does not agree with the Caffey, Iseley & Ireland Families Genealogy. The note appears to have a wrong date or be missing something. She probably had a good reason for not agreeing with the cited Genealogy so we need to be aware that the parents I have listed, may be erroneous. Betty's note, "John Caffey of Ireland had son Michael Caffey born Ireland, came to Maryland c1740, married Mary Hooper born MD. (had) 1. John born c1729 MD, married Sophia, etc" -- JW). Betty also listed her sources for the John Caffey - Sophia family; Info extracted from Marriage bonds, Guilford Co. NC Guilford Co. Wills, A046 - 19 July, 1783
John Caffey will Old Guilford NC Court Minutes 1781 - 1788, by Nanct Hawlick Slien Genealogy of Caffey, Iseley, & Ireland Families of Rockingham, Guilford, and Alamance Counties in North Carolina.
John Caffey - 1729 -- Genealogy of Caffey, Iseley, & Ireland Families The tradition among the Caffeys who are
descended from Guilford and Rockingham settlers of that name is that the family came from Maryland, and more
specifically from "Tuckahoe" Tuckahoe as a placename in Maryland is found on Tuckahoe Creek, which flows
southward into Choptank River on Marylands eastern shore. The creek forms the boundary between Talbot and
Caroline counties. A large park in Caroline County, on the banks of the creek, is called Tuckahoe. Historically,
"Tuckahoe Hundred" is mentioned in older records of Talbot County. However, it was in Dorchester County records that our Caffeys appear to be mentioned. Both Dorchester and Queen Anne were parent counties of Caroline. In 1741, William Caffey and Thomas Pearson, planter, and his wife Jean or Jane, jointly sold part of a tract of land in Dorchester County, land called "Pearsons Lott." One of the witnesses to the document was Henrv HoorJer.
In 1754, Michael Caffey of Dorchester County left a will naming his wife Sarah and sons William, Charles, John and Henry. Two years later, mention is made of property owned by John Ennalls, son of William Ennalls, deceased, and one plantation is described as the one where Sarah Caffy "lately lived" In 1761 and 1762, depositions were sought out which would "perpetuate the bounds" of a piece of land called "Ennalls Inheritance". One of the statements made by David Poole who stated that Michael Caffey and William Ennal, both deceased, had shown Poole the bounded tree of "Ennalls Inheritance" where Michael Caffey and William Ennals had lived. Depositions taken between March 1764 and June 1767 in Dorchester County included that of John Caffey, planter, about 39 years old, about 39 years old, who had lived on land of Rosannah Hodson, widow of John Hodson, about 13 or 14 years earlier.
In 1767, Charles Caffey and William Caffey, "Gent.", bought part of a tract called "Grimes Range" from Peter Grimes.
All parties were of Dorchester County. John Caffe in 1774 bought part of a tract named "Wright's Venture" from
James Wright and Nancy, his wife. In October 1777, John Caffey and Suffiah, his wife, sold the same tract to Daniel James Brooks. No further references to Caffeys were found in the McAllister Abstracts of Dorchester Land Records, and no records were found in the microfilm indexes to Caroline County land records. Very early mention is made in Gustavus Skordas"'The Early Settlers of Maryland" to Rebecca Coffee, who had been "transported to Maryland" in 1675. Also noted is Robert Coffee, shoemaker, who immigrated to Somerset County Maryland in 1680. Somerset County in Maryland's Eastern Shore was erected in 1666, and (with Talbot) was a parent county of Dorchester, which was formed in 1699. Whether or not Robert and Rebecca are pertinent to our research, it does seem very likely that the John Caffey who bought land in 1774 and sold it in 1777 might be the same John Caffey who gave his age as 39 between 1764 and 1767. That would place his date of birth at about 1725 and 1728. And that makes him a likely son of the Michael Caffey whose Dorchester County will was dated 1754. It also seems to make him, possibly, the John Caffey who died in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1785... ...John Caffey probably married first about 1750 in Maryland, Suffiah or Sophia, last name unknown, who died sometime after 1777. Estate papers of John Caffey in the North Carolina Archives refer to his widow Nancy and say she was the step-mother of Michael. Suffiah was probably the mother of John Caffey's children...

He was married to Suffiah\Sophia (UNK) about 1750 in MD.. Suffiah\Sophia (UNK) was born about 1730. She died after 1777. John CAFFEY and Suffiah\Sophia (UNK) had the following children:
+7 i. Michael CAFFEY.
+8 ii. John CAFFEY.
+9 iii. Elizabeth CAFFEY.
+10 iv. Nancy CAFFEY.
+11 v. Sophia CAFFEY.
+12 vi. Sarah CAFFEY.
+13 vii. Mary CAFFEY.
+14 viii. Rebeccah CAFFEY.

436. Thomas Stokes ?

http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/t/o/Cecil-G-Stokes/index.html

Christopher Stokes was one of first settlers in Janestown, VA

Quite possibly Edward and Thomas are related. There has been a good bit of correspondence on this issue. I think the concensus is that Edward may be the son of Thomas and a previous wife, whose existence has been long theorized but not yet substantiated. Join the merry group trying to solve this puzzle. See:

Thomas Stokes - married Mary Norman in Guilford C. NC in 1787; owned land there 1787-1825; moved to AL w/ grown children in c1825; d. c1841AL. Many descendants, identification/confirmation of parents needed..

Edward G. Stokes parents were ( I believe) : (absolutely no evidence given and doutful)
Thomas Stokes b. abt 1751, VA. d. 1841 Clark Co. Alabama. He married 1st. a pre war 1776 bride, name unknown,
she died bef 1787.
Children
1. Edward G.
2. Daniel b. abt 1780 m. Mary Ross.
2nd. wife married 23 Jan 1787 Guilford Co. N.C. Mary Norman she died in N.C.
Children;
1. Thomas Norman b. Guilford Co. N.C.
2. Charles
3. Mary Tabitha b. 8 Jun 1790 m. Sep 1812 James Fulton. she died 27 Nov 1876

Thomas Stokes parents were;
David Stokes d. abt 1797 married Margaret Dupree b. 1738 Halifax, VA.
Children; 1. Bartlett b. 1770 d. 1840
2. Henry
3. Josiah
4. Thomas
5. William d. 1843
6. Young.

Daniel Stokes, yes. Daniel L. Stokes, maybe. A "Daniel Stokes born in 1780" could be a son of Thomas Stokes who married Mary Norman, but would probably not be the product of their 1/20/1787 marriage. One researcher says that Mary was a second wife, but no name has been offered for the first wife. My gg-GF was Thomas "Norman" Stokes, son of Thomas and Mary (Norman) Stokes who married 1/20/1787 in Guilford County NC and purchased land there a couple of months later. Family tradition had Charles "and others" as brothers to "Norman". (We have a string of seven generations of family members with the name Thomas Norman Stokes.)Other data says that Daniel and John were Norman's other brothers. I also have persuasive text from descendents of Tabitha Stokes Fulton that she and "Norman" were siblings. All of these folks sold their NC land and moved with their families to south Alabama in about 1825. There is also the possibility of a brother named Edward whose family went to Tennessee instead, but this relationship is more circumstantial (not yet documented). Some researchers have concluded that the parents of Thomas Stokes (who married Mary Norman) were David and Margaret (DuPree) Stokes. This makes sense, but I hope we can find more persuasive evidence of this than I have seen as yet. Interesting puzzle, particularly with the number of 18th century citizens named David Stokes or Thomas Stokes.

Living as neighbors to Samuel Fulton on Reedy Fork creek were CharlesNorman and Thomas Stokes, and in the natural course ofevents membersof these three families intermarried. Charles Norman was the son ofNehemiah Norman of Tyrrell County, North Carolina. Thomas Stokes wasthe son of David and Margaret Dupree Stokes of Brunswick County,Virginia. He had moved to Guilford County soon after the close of theRevolutionary War and on 23 January, 1787 he married as his secondwife Mary Norman, daughter of Charles Norman (Guilford County, NorthCarolina Marriages Vol.' 7, page 96 In the next generation theirdaughter Mary Tabitha Stokes marr ied James Fulton, son of SamuelFulton (See Stokes History for more information on this family). Someresearchers have suggested that Mary Norman was a sister of CharlesNorman rather than daughter, and that both were children of NehemiahNorman of Tyrrell County. His Will does show that he had a daughternamed Mary as well as a son Charles, but that Mary Norman is not theone who married Thomas Stokes. The law required that the marriage beperformed in the county of the bride's residence and the abovedocumented marriage proves that it took place in Guilford County. Soshe was the daughter of Charles Norman who lived as a neighbor toThomas Stokes, and he was the only person by the name of Norman livingin this county at this time according to the 1790 Census.

Introduction
This is the beginning of a Web page devoted to the search for information related to ancestor Thomas Stokes, who married Mary Norman in Guilford County, North Carolina, in January of 1787. To avoid confusion, let's refer to him as Thomas/1787. Decades later, Thomas/1787 sold his land in NC and moved with some of his grown children and their families to Alabama, where good fresh land was abundant. He was alive in 1840, when he appeared to be between 80 and 90 years old. His exact dates and places of birth (presumably between 1751 and 1760 in VA, but possibly in NC or MD) and death (about 1841 in AL) are not known to me.
Offspring
What was known by my grandfather's generation was that the children of Thomas/1787 "included" two sons, Thomas "Norman" Stokes (my gg-GF), and Charles Stokes (with whom Thomas/1787 lived in his later years). We now have records naming four sons (Thomas, Charles, John, and Daniel). We have persuasive Fulton-family tradition in published text that traces Thomas/1787's daughter Tabitha and her family from NC to new homes in AL and then MS. And, there is tradition in the Edward Stokes family suggesting that Thomas/1787 was his father. This is a strong Stokes family that migrated to Tennessee about the time Thomas/1787 moved to Alabama, and some of them were early settlers of Missouri.
Parents and Origins
There is information that Thomas/1787 was the son of David Stokes (born c.a. 1730, died before 1794) and wife Margaret Dupree of Lunenburg County, VA. Margaret's father was Thomas Dupree of Lunenburg County. David Stokes was the son of Richard Stokes (born c.a. 1698, died after 1773) and wife Martha Evans(?). Richard Stokes was the son of John Stokes (born c.a.1670, died 1746) and wife Elizabeth Bradford(?), whom he married in 1697. John Stokes was the son of Sylvanus Stokes (born 1636, Charles City County, VA) and wife Mary Bishop. This Sylvanus Stokes was the son of John Stokes/Stoaks (born in England, died 1664 in Charles City County, VA) and wife Ann (born in England by 1602, died before 1661 in Charles City County, VA). John and Ann sailed from London to Virginia (James Island) on the Warwick by 1623. This appears to need confirmation.
Descendents
The known descendents of Thomas/1787 cover the range of states and occupations. Inclusion of the Stokes families that may be descendents of Thomas/1787 probably cover these ranges as well.
Names
The name Thomas Stokes is evident in all generations of my family, with a succession of seven generations having a Thomas Norman Stokes. There are, of course, individuals named Thomas Stokes throughout history who may or may not be related to us. But, we do not know of any unrelated individuals named Thomas Norman Stokes. Other names that persist in our family are Gaines, Gregg, and Hill. All of these are surnames of female ancestors. Some of their family trees are well documented and some are not.
Challenges

Te challenges for the genealogist of the cyberspace generation are to confirm or correct information about the origin of Thomas/1787 and to identify all of his descendents

Judy,

I trust that you are corresponding with others looking for the same
information on Edward, as seen at:
http://genweb.net/~stokes/most-wanted.html

I'm still looking for the parents of my ggg-gf Thomas Stokes, who lived
just around the bend from Edward, Edward's father-in-law, etc. in
Guilford County in 1800.

I would love to be able to confirm or refute hypotheses that Edward was
the son of Thomas (and hypothetical first wife before he married Mary
Norman in 1787) and/or that "my" Thomas was the son of David and Margaret
(Dupree) Stokes of Lunenburg County. Maybe with enough of us digging (as
time permits) we can figure this out.

Notes for Benjamin Scrivner:
Benjamin is the first Scrivner ancestor known in America. Little is known of him in England. Due to the custom of indenturing young males between 15-19, we know that Benjamin signed an agreement October 13, 1729 in London England to come to America. Thus we believe the birthdate to be between 1709-1714. The immigration agent was Joseph Whilton and the register containing Benjamin's name is recorded in the records office of the Corporation of London. Indentured servants usually served 5 years for their master in exchange for passage. Doris Collier in her book believes that Benjamin was the grandson of John Scrivner and Lidia Hutchison, but there are no birth records
available to prove their direct descendants. It is also possible that he was the second or third son of Charles and Ann Wharton Scrivner and did not inherit from his father, since the first born son inherited all at that time.
***
We know that Benjamin lived in Plumstead Township, Pennsylvania in 1752 and Lower Saucon Township, Northhampton County, Pennsylvania. by 1761. The last record is the 1767 tax list of lower Saxony Township. He also lived in Bybery Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, the Abington Township area (Now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania), Plumstead Township in Bucks County, and then in lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania where he is believed to have died. The family later migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina by Conestoga Wagons.
After his first wife, Ruth Bradfield, died he remarried and his second wife bore three children, Benjamin( 6/20/1757), David (ca 1759) and Mary (Ca 1761)
nia; died 1830 in Virginia. He married Rebecca Hall.Children of Benjamin Scrivner and Ruth Bradfield are:

Dear Bobbi,
My name is Lee Scrivner and I a descendant of Benjamin Scrivner--via his son James Scrivner. I am the gggggrandson of John Scrivner, son of James. I have quite extensive info on the family. Most of it has been obtained by the valuable research of Doris Scrivner Collier, who has written a book on the Scrivner family. The most recent research has solidified the date of Benjamin Scrivner's birth in 1711--in Bermondsey, London Eng. He came as an indentured servant to Philadelphia in 1729. This info was varified by the records of St. Mary Magdelene Church in London. They also listed Benjamin Scrivner's parents as John Scrivner and Judith Brooks. John was a lighterman (boatman) on the river Thames and lived on Jacob Street in Bermondsey, London. John Scrivner's father is also a John Scrivner who was born around 1645. He married Lydia Hutchinson in 1672. These are the most recent findings on the Scrivner line, found by Doris late last year. If you would like to know more specifics, I will be happy to provide what I can. If you have anything to share, pleas do.
Thank you.

White indentured servants came from all over Great Britain. Men, women, and sometimes children signed a contract with a master to serve a term of 4 to 7 years. In exchange for their service, the indentured servants received their passage paid from England, as well as food, clothing, and shelter once they arrived in the colonies. Some were even paid a salary. When the contract had expired, the servant was paid freedom dues of corn, tools, and clothing, and was allowed to leave the plantation. During the time of his indenture, however, the servant was considered his masters personal property and his contract could be inherited or sold. Prices paid for indentured servants varied depending on skills.

Joel insists that he was born in Va. All our Meltons swear they went to Ky. from Va. No mention of any N.C. which makes it hard to trace. Bought land in Missouri 1818 and was living in White Co. Tenn before moving to Missouri. 1823 is the first record of any other Meltons in the area. I believe that the father of Joel is John that bought up land in Wayne Co., Ky and died in Lincoln Co. Ky. John "EARLY" Melton married Catherine Coldiron and he and John Sr. moved to Lincoln Co., Ky. John Harris Melton son of Early and Catherine Coldiron Melton moved to Cole Co. around 1846. Joel gave him some land. Deed says sold but family history says otherwise.
Joel left a will which excluded his "relatives". He left everything to a slave Anthony Melton who married Cressida Bates. Winny lived with Anthony and Cressida until she died. (no death dates or markers found for them) I found a deed that Winny signed in 1866 with Anthony selling some of the property. family legend --An Aunt that gave everything to a former slave.

Abbrev: History of Rutherford Co., NC
Page: #503: Capt. William Neville was an early, but brief resident of
Rutherford Co., NC. His parentage is unknown, though it is
supposed by many that he was a son of Joseph Neville and Ann
Bohannan, but proof of this relationship is still lacking. The
first record we find for William is in 1760 when he "farm lets"
200 acres of land in the Manor of Leeds, Fauquier Co., VA. The
rental agreement is for the duration of his natural life and
also for that of his wife, Winefred, and son, Jesse. A similar
document for 202 1/2 acres in the Manor of Leeds was made in
1763 listing his wife and son, Yelverton. By 1768 he had moved
to NC as he witnessed a deed in Tryon County at that time.

William Neville apparently saw service in two wars. He is
shown as an ensign in the Fauquier Co., VA Militia in 1762 at
which time we were engaged in the French and Indian War. He
was also a captain in the Revolutionary War stationed on the
frontiers of Rutherford and Tryon Counties, NC. William never
received a pension but references to his service can be found
in a pay voucher at the NC State Archives and also in the
pension records of his son, Yelverton (S4614), and in the
pension of Thomas R. Musick (S16897). His son, Jesse, also
served in the Revolutionary War and was pensioned (S21899).

For many years William served as a Justice of the Peace. The
first record of this position is found in Tryon Co., NC in
1776. He continued in this capacity after the new county of
Rutherford was formed, through 1789. He also served as a
sheriff in Rutherford Co. as mentioned in the pension of his
son, Yelverton, and as found in various deed books for 1788 and
1789.

By the time of the 1790 census, William was a resident of 96
District, Pendleton Co., SC with three males under 16, seven
females and three slaves. Deed records of the county show that
from 1792-1794 he was a Justice of the Peace. By 1799 he had
moved again, this time to Barren Co., KY and he shows up on the
tax lists for that county through 1808. In 1808 he gave a
power of attorney to sell his Barren Co., KY land and about
this time probably moved to White Co., TN. Tax records for
this county begin in 1811 and Williams appears in 1811 and 1812
but not in later years. The Barren Co., KY deeds show that in
Sept. 1813 he gave a power of attorney to his son John to sell
some of his land, and that is the last record we have for him.

William was married to Wineford Oldham, a daughter of John and
Mary Oldham of Northumberland Co., VA, as shown by a 1792 power
of attorney in Henry Co., VA Deed Book 5. Wineford and William
Neville both signed the marriage consent in 1796 of their
daughter, Malinda. We do not have a record of Wineford
...(can't read my copy at this point). ...wife, so one cannot
assume that she was deceased.

In 1902 a manuscript on the Neville family was compiled by
William F. Boogher, a professional genealogist. In it he
showed the following children for William Neville: Yelverton,
Jesse, Joseph, William, Charlotte, Millie, Frances, John,
Winifred, Joicy and Letus. Unfortunately there is no
indication as to where this list of children came from. Using
other sources, we have been able to prove that Yelverton,
Jesse, Millie (Malinda), John, Joicy (Joyce) and Letus
(Lettice) were indeed his children. From pension records we
find births for Jesse, 5 July 1759, Fauquier Co., VA, and
Yelverton, 25 December 1763, Fauquier Co., VA.

Marriage records show that Joyce (Nevill) Harrington married
John Howdershell, 6 February 1796, Lincoln Co., KY. Malinda
married David Thompson, 3 December 1796, Mercer Co., KY, and
John married Millie Neville, 24 May 1804, Barren Co., KY.
Jesse is said to have married Margaret, widow of Thomas Lynch
and stayed in Pickens Co., SC where his will was proved 25 July
1842. Yelverton married Elizabeth and according to his
obituary died in his 97th year in Jackson Co., TN.

According to Boogher, Charlotte married Hardin Williams.
Frances married Richard Melton, Wineford married Joel Melton
and Lettice married Richard Lundy. Four of the girls moved to
Missouri. Wineford and Lettice to Cole Co., Joyce to St.
Louis Co., and Malinda to Callaway Co., then later to Lake Co.,
CA where she died 29 January 1869. Sons Joseph and William
resided in White Co., TN. William seems to be the William B.
who married Mary Ann McKinney, March 1810 in Barren Co., KY.

This writer is a descendant of William Neville through his
daughter Malinda who married David Thompson. David appears on
the tax lists of Barren Co., KY from 1799 to 1805. About that
time he moved to White Co., TN where in 1807 he was a juror.
They resided here until 1817 when David sold his land and
disappears from the tax records. They moved to Callaway Co.,
MO where David died and a settlement of his estate was made 5
June 1826 listing his wife Malinda and sons Wm. N., John,
George C., David H. and Jesse. In 1854 Malinda crossed the
plains with an ox team and spent the remainder of her days with
her sons John A. and James Townsend Thompson in northern
California.

Their son James Townsend Thompson seems to have been named for
a surveyor and neighbor in White Co., TN. James was born 19
April 1811, White Co., TN and married Louisa Clay, 22 November
1835, Cole Co., MO. He served in the Black Hawk War (Blwt
63529-55-160) and was a member from Santa Clara Co. of the
Third CA State Assembly. He died 11 October 1869 in San Diego,
CA while on a trip. Louisa was born 29 March 1811, St. Charles
Co., MO, a daughter of Jeremiah Walker Clay and Nancy Ott, a
widow. Louisa died 16 January 1892, Lakeport, CA and like her
husband and mother-in-law is buried at Hartley Cemetery in
Lakeport.

Shirley Wilcox, president of NSG, has proven that her ancestor WilliamNevill (1739-1810) of Fauquier County , VA and of North Carolina, SC, KY, and TN, was theWilliam living in the far western area of North Carolina/SC. While William moved on toKentucky to the area where his alleged, not proven, brother James Nevill ofFauquier had migrated (Lincoln/Barren County , KY area), some of William'schildren stayed in SC. One who apparently stayed in the area of
Greenville,SC was William's son Jesse. (Our own list member Tom Dirksen is off thisline, isn't he?) Now, over in the Halifax and Orange County area of centralnc, there were a couple of Jesse Nevills, too, but they were descended fromthe Benjamin Nevill who is found in the 1746 deed in Edgecombe County , North Carolina.Today, we have so many more records available now to show us that theFauquier Nevills and the Granville/Halifax/Orange County Nevills do not have
anestablished link, but I can see how easy it would have been for them to
jumpto the conclusion that they were directly descended from the Fauquier County ,
VA line.
