Shady Grubbs, Joshua Skidmore VA, OH

(This is the ONLY source that says Joshua is father to William)
Shady (Saida, Sadie?) Grubbs m. Joshua Skidmore probably in VA. One of their sons, William, was born in Bedford Co. 9 May 1778. William m. Mary Randall 12 Jun 1796 in Campbell Co. VA, maybe, and moved to Logan Co. OH. I would like to determine Shady's given name and to find information on her birth.http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~firebird/Coil.htm
Gabriel Coil was well associated with John Skidmore and took a fancy to John's younger sister Rebecca. It is believed that Gabriel married Rebecca Skidmore about 1761, in Augusta Co., VA. Rebecca Skidmore was the daughter of Joseph Skidmore and Agnes Caldwell. Rebecca was born about 1741 and moved to South Branch with her family in 1754. Shortly after Rebecca and Gabriel married, Joseph Skidmore Jr., sold 101 acres on South Branch of the Potomac to John Skidmore and Gabriel Coil. 20 August 1761, deed recorded 1764 February. On the same date Gabriel purchased an additional 102 acres also from Joseph Skidmore, Jr.
Gabriel and Rebecca had settled close to her family and their first child Elizabeth was born in 1762. Gabriel became a nationalized in the same year on 18 May, Augusta County, VA....
Shortly after this time Gabriel was getting itchy feet to move on to the newly formed lands of Ohio.
1799 May 17, Gabriel and Rebecca sold their 45 acres of the jointly held property purchased in 1761 from Joseph Skidmore Jr., to John Skidmore. Gabriel and Rebecca sold the 102 acres purchased in 1761 to George Coil, brother to Gabriel. Gabriel Coil is listed on the Ross Co., OH Tax records in 1806.
(Note...our William Skidmore moved to Ohio between 1803-6)Here is one Skidmore family migratino into VA from Deleware

Thanks for the response. I have found that you are probably right. The Richard Grubbs, circa 1740 was the son of Richard Grubbs born 13 June 1726 who was the son of John Grubbs Jr. who was the son of John Grubb. John Grubb(probably Sr.) came from England in 1677.how one Grubbs family got to VA

William Grubbs and his wife Susanna Hearne came to Kentucky in

died a few days after he came to Kentucky, and was buried at

Note:
Note:
Library of Congress has a pamphlet of the Grubbs family of
Pennsylvania and Delaware, some of whom removed to Virginia.
This family was the immediate descendants of John Grubbs who
immigrated from England, 1677, and settled at Grubb?s Landing,
Delaware in 1681. Judge Ignatius Grubbs of Wilmington,
Delaware, is a descendant of this line. No connection has been
made between this line and the line of William Grubbs, although
both families came from England.

218. Edward G Stokes
IN 1840 Meigs County census we have the following Stokes/Chilcuitts
Larken Stokes or Lewis Stokes
Larken M Stokes
Edward Stokes
George Stokes
no Chil anything
Thomas Coffee
My gut instinct is that Edward's father is a Richard from MD that I have yet to find. He apears to follow the old naming the kids after the parents. Note 2nd son and second daughter are named after Celia's parents. This would make his parents Richard and Sarah?????Note a cousin of Edward's marr a Chilcuitt also see John/Sophia to John/Mary to Hooper/Mary Chilcuitt
Note - diff sources put his (Edward's) birth in MD and others, VA
possibly had another son Thomas who appears in 1860 Laclede Co, MO census
As for Stokes in the Civil War. My Great Grandfather was only 7 years old at the time but his oldest brother William Pinkney Stokes b. 3 Oct 1834, Meigs Co. TN. severed in Co. H, 10th Missouri Infantry (Col. Alexander C. Pickett), 2nd Brigade (Brig. Gen. Mosby M. Parsons), Private, Army of Trans-Mississippi, C.S.A. 1862 till surrender 9 Jun 1865 in Shreveport, Louisana. William died 2 Feb 1913 and is burried at the Pendleton Cemetery, Maries County, Missouri.
Another brotherThomas E. Stokes b. Oct 1847,Megis Co. TN. MAY have severed as a Sargent in Co. E, 1st
Northeast Missouri Cavalry Battalion, C.S.A. But the Missouri State Archives only list a T. Stokes and I can not be sure its him. The above are children of Edward S. Stokes (my gg Grandfather) brother to Sarah. Here is the rest of the Stokes family:
Edward G. (G. may stand for George) Stokes b. abt 1770, Virginia d. Tennessee. Married 1789 North Carolina to

It is not known whether Thomas slave holdings and southern sympathies influenced this decision. This family became one of many separated in their
loyalties when Thomas and one of his sons (William Henry Stokes) joined the Confederate forces and another son
(Jasper D.L. Stokes) joined the Union army.(No record of Thomas or his sons are in the Missouri State Archives).
7. Rebecca b. bef.1811 N.C. m. James McElroy

Supposedly, her father was John Chilcutt/Chilcott and mother, Rebecca ?, and any siblings she might have had. John Chilcutt's birthdate has been listed as 1758, so the date of Celia's birth is questionable.
Will gladly share information. Not her but prob a relation
Your Celia CHILCUTT may be the same one of that name who m. Richard VICKARS on 8th day, 9th mo., 1791, in a Quaker ceremony in Maryland. See the Society of Friends: Nicholite Marriage Records compiled by Kenneth L. Carroll, in "More About the Nicholites," in Maryland Historical Magazine, Vo. 46 (1951), p. 289. In a 1992 message, Loretta Wright (E-mail address of VTMC48A, which may be an old Prodigy address?), she stated that Joshua (1758-1794) and Esther CHILCOTE had children named Mary, Chloe, Rhoda, Celia, Ester, Phebe, Peter, John and Ann. Joshua may have been a son of Peter. I have more information on Joshua's other children, if you think this is your line. (Joshua may be brother to my Celia)

Letter from RN2TRAVL
I am a decendent of Yelverton Melton through Snelling Johnson Melton. I found the Richard Melton/Frances Neville connection quite some time back, but did not connect them. Do we know for sure that her name was Frances Rebecca Neville? Did you know that Frances and Winnifred Neville had a brother named Yelverton Neville. He was a Revolutionary Soldier. I have always felt that this is who our Yelverton was named after. Please send any corrections or additions to Jesse M. Lawrence Jr.

Rebecca Melton is the mother of William N. Melton and Yelvaton and James Melton. Joel and Winnafred Neville/Newell Melton came to Mid -Missouri very early. He owed back taxes in Cooper Co. (Cole not formed until 1820) for the year 1819. By 1823, Yelvaton and Rebecca were in Cole co. (both married that year) William N. stopped off in St. Louis and did not arrive until after 1830 census. 1832, Wm. N. file for insolvency in Cole Co. After he got that taken care of, He and Yelvaton ran for offices. Wm. N. was sheriff and Yelvaton was assessor.I am searching for ancestors of the brothers Yelvaton, William and James Melton. Yelvaton was born about 1800, William abt 1805 and James abt 1808. They migrated from White Co., TN to Cole County, MO in the early 1800's. Their mother's name is Rebecca (last name unknown). Probably came in company of their uncle Joel Melton who was married to Winnifred Neville. Prior to Tennessee, this line was probably in Kentucky, as that is where Joel and Winnifred married. Winnifred's sister, Frances Neville, also married a Richard Melton. Richard could possibly be father or brother to Joel, but I have no proof of this.
