Thomas was probably born about 1794. Thomas lived in Guilford Co. in 1821 when he appointed James Davis, his brother-in-law to recover the remainder of his inheritance from the estate of his recently deceased mother in Rockingham Co. He may have left the state soon after since nothing more is known of him here. A Thomas Caffey, born between 1790 and 1800, is found in Meigs Co. TN in 1840 with a large family. Living nearby is Robert Caffey, born between 1810 and 1820, possibly a son, with a young family. In 1850, James Cafer, Thomas
Caffee, William Gaffer, and Levin Caffy lived in Meigs Co. Thomas may have married Rachel, daughter of Hannah (Flack) and John Dougherty of Rockingham Co, NC, since John Dougherty named daughter Rachel Caffey in his will written in 1836. RUTH PERRY, born ca.1794, was mother to Allen Perry (born 10 July 1824 in N.C.), and Noah Perry. Ruth is listed on the Meigs County, Tn, 1850 Census, living in the household of her son Noah. I believe she was in N.C. in the early 1820's, since that was the place of Allen's birth. Ruth Perry's maiden name is unknown, as is the name of her husband. I believe she died ca 1856 in Tennessee.
We were so excited to read your message, because Ruth Perry is one of our biggest mysteries. Allen Perry is my ggreat grandfather. His son James Franklin Perry was a preacher at Pleasant Hill Church in Meigs Co., TN. He was the father of William E., whose son Leonard was my father. We know that Allen was most probably the son either of Silas or James Perry who lived in Monroe County before 1830. They are brothers, sons of Nathan Washington Perry who died in 1800 in either Maryland or Greenberry SC. What we can't find is where Ruth came into the picture. Silas was married to Hannah Lewis in 1821. James married Susan Jane Harlan, Hannah's daughter by a previous marriage, in 1838. He must have had a first wife, but was her name Ruth? And were they divorced? Could Ruth have been an aunt or friend instead of mother? Could Ruth have been the mother of Jane Mavity Perry, Noah's wife? The census taker could have neglected to write in her last name. I have visited Allen's and Noah's graves. Would be glad to share any information with you.
Looking for RUTH PERRY, mother of Allen and Noah Perry of Meigs County, Tn. Found on 1850 Meigs Cnty Census, under Noah as head of household. Was 66, so born ca 1794? Appears to have died in Tn between 1850 and 1855. Expect she was in NC in 1824, since that is date of Allen's birth there. Allen married Matilda McKeehan in Meigs County, Tn, November 1842. Known children: Sarah;Mary E.;Martha C; James F; Maranda A; Celia M; Ruth M; John Wesley b. Oct 27, 1857 in Meigs Cnty, Tn. Allen Perry died in Meigs County October 30, 1882. Suspect that Ruth died between 1850 and 1855, probably in Tn as well. Thanks. Any help is much appreciated.

1800's. Their mother's name is Rebecca (last name unknown). Probably came in company of their uncle Joel Melton who was married to Winnifred Neville. Prior to Tennessee, this line was probably in Kentucky, as that

To: Paskenell@aol.comDear David,
I hope I have not misled you. I do not have a lot of proven material on this bunch. These guys are quite mysterious. My main source of information is Malinda James, who lives in Cole Co MO, where Joel, Winnifred, Rebecca and
her three sons ended up. What is interesting is that Malinda has found quite a few original documents, like court and probate records that are rich with information. She descends from Yelverton's youngest daughter, Julia Melton
Taylor. What is your line? I descend from Yelverton's brother, William Neville Melton.
Have you explored any possible Neville/Melton connections in addition to Joel and Winnifred? One researcher thinks that Rebecca was Frances Rebecca Neville and that she married Joel's brother or cousin, Richard Melton. He
does not provide proof or even a source for this, however. I can't find Malinda bases her theory that Joel was not their father on county records in Cole CO MO. She says Joel made legally sure that no "relatives" would
inherit his property. There is nothing on file that indicates William or Yelverton or James were his sons. No offspring are mentioned in his Will. Joel died first and Winnifred left everything to the young slave and his wife who had cared for her. I guess he was a freed slave then. His name was Jonathon Melton. Interesting, huh? So, while it is still a possibility that Joel is the father, there's reason to doubt it.
I am under the impression that Rebecca was in KY and TN at the same time as Joel and Winnifred, and that they all came to MO at roughly the same time. Rebecca and Yelverton were in Cole CO by the time they each married (1823). William stopped off in St. Louis for several years, got in to debt, married Narcissa Chapman in 1828, sold his property in St. Louis to Narcissa's grandfather, and came to Cole CO around 1830-1832. There he declared
insolvency, but was elected Sheriff within two years. Yelverton was a Justice of the Peace, the county census taker, and tax assessor. I've got more on the brothers, and on Rebecca, but it all pertains to their lives in MO. I think a lot of us have hit a brick wall in determining the father of Rebecca's sons. Let me know if you know anything that might shed light on this.

Joel and Yelverton (sometimes spelled Yelvaton) are my ancestors. I'm descended from Yelvaton's son Jerome Ransom Melton. Jerome Ransom is buried in Woodlawn, Harrison County, TX. Snelling Johnson Melton (Joel's
son and Yelvaton's brother) is buried in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX. There is a Civil War marker on his grave. I know a lot about Jerome Ransom Melton and some about Snelling. I think I'm making a little progress on Joel, since I think he really married a Winnifred Neville, not Winnifred Newell as some records indicate. If so, that will explain where the Yelverton name came from, as there is a Yelverton Neville in the Neville line. What do you know? We should trade info? Yelvaton Melton's wife was Susan Taylor, one of a large line of Cole County, Mo Taylors. I'll look to see if your Lucy Taylor is one of them. Also, what is your Melton link?http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/l/e/i/Vera-M-Leisure/GENE783-0069.html

They eloped to California Mo. and stayed with Melton cousins until Tommy Taylor sent word that "all was forgiven, Come Home" Cole Co. records show that they were married at Millbrook, Mo. 14 November, 1869. Millbrook was the nearest little town. I guess they stopped off and was married by Justice of the peace before going on to Moniteau Co. Julia Ann is the only one left at home at the time. She cried for joy when that horrible man Abraham Lincoln was assasinated. Julia Ann climbed a haystack to gather eggs. An enormous blacksnake had beat her to it. It startled her and she fell breaking her leg. Soldiers was fighting in the area and they could not get a doctor to her. It was hot July so they laid her on a pallet by the hand dug cistern. The men and children had rolled snowballs and filled the cistern in the winter so the water was ice cold. They fed her spoons of whiskey and poured cold water over the feverish leg. It was 1 p. m the next day before the doctor could get through. The leg never healed. As a very old lady, it was still an open sore that she kept bandaged. She was a cripple her entire life. Snelling Johnson Melton is living in Cooper Co. in 1860 Missouri census. Susan and family if living with him. When he joins the army, she goes to Tommie Taylors with Julia Ann.1840 Missouri, Cole County, Moreau Twp/Silverton(Yelverton) Melton, Roll No. 222, pg. 90

I saw your post about Daniel Adams on the Adams surname board, and replyed, however you may not yet have seen it.
Daniels brother Thomas Benton ("BUD") Adams was my wifes GGrandfather.
TB and Daniels father was Lazurus Elisha, and their mother was Elendor Sheppard.
The family moved to Dallas CO Mo in 1850 from Grundy Co Tn (formerly Coffee Co Tn).
There were other brothers (Smith Wesley, James, Riley and maybe two others I can't recall)
My sister in law has done a lot of research on the family. If you are still interested I can put you in touch.

To: Paskenell@aol.comFunny thing,
I think if you check the census for 1860 in Dallas Co you will find two of
Daniels children living with Lazurus Elisha/Elijah Adams and Elendor
Sheppard (note: the Ellender in your message I believe was one of the two
comparing ages and the census takers note saying they were the children of
someone else).
Also interesting to note is Grundy Co. Tn did not exist until 1840 (I have
copies of the petition sent to the state of Tn requesting it be formed from
parts of Coffee and two other counties)
As to why the family does not speak much of Elisha,
It seems as though during the Civil war, Elisha was on leave at the old home
place (still 3 1/2 east and 7 north of Buffalo, not in town, but no longer
still in the family dang it) when Southern Raiders took him from his home
and threatened to kill his family members if he did not divulge the where
abouts of certian Mo. Home Guard troups in the area (of which he was a
part).
He told.
As a result of someone telling a Union Officer what he had done,Union
solders came and took him to Lebanon (LaClede Co where the Union
Headquarters for southern Missouri operations was located), where they
tried, convicted, and killed him for treason. He is supposedly buried there
in an unmarked grave.
Thats why Margo dosen't know what happened to him. (By the way she lists her
Grandmother as Belle but her name is written Beldavera Jane Adams in Thomas
Bentons family bible)
The Adams family(s) homesteaded most of a large area of north central Dallas
Co stretching from Plad to the Leadmine and Tunas areas. (each male was
entitled to 160 acres if they could prove up on it)
There was an Err Adams (I believe he was from James line) from Leadmine that
ran a lead smelter in what the locals call the dripping cave (in Leadmine
hollar)
Les Adams owned the property until his death several years back.
There were other related Adams in the area and still are (I don't think all
nine boys Margo lists are the sons of Elisha and Elendor).
Paul Adams at Urbana is kin to my wife somehow, but they still have not
sorted out the exact relationship (he was blood kin to Err and Err was blood
kin to her).
It appears there were related Adams familys not just the immediate Elisha
Adams group that came to Dallas Co near the same time.
Noah Adams (a decendant of James) and several others have supplied my sister
in law with information from their lines.
I would love to see the photo of Daniel.
We have photos of Thomas Benton, and Smith Wesley circa 1920 so there may be
a strong family resembalance.
Send me your address and I will have her get in touch with you via snail
mail (shes not into computers yet).
Thanks, RileyDavid, we have coresponded before, but I thought you might want this on Elisah Lazarus and Elender from Grundy CO TN 1850 census.AD#19 - 1850 Grundy Co. Tn. census, Lazarus Adams 43, E. Adams 39, & family: F.A. 17, T.C. 15, D. 14, J.F. 11, T.B. 9, S.W. 6, Philadelphia 2, P. 8 mos.

He appears again in the 1870 Dallas Co MO census at 33 I am sure the Daniel buried at Kirks Chapel is the son of Elisah Lazarus and Elender Adams.Mom advises that an old family legend has that one of her ancestors was killed for divulging information during the Civil War. It is said that one of his infants feets were held to a fire until he talked. This is probably that ancestor.

History of Washington County, Pennsylvania
Solomon Smith was a mere boy when his father came from the East into this part of Pennsylvania, which was then termed "emigrating West." They stopped at Redstone Old Fort for several years, and removed to Washington County in 1786. Solomon Smith's sons were Reuben, Samuel, and John Smith, and Mrs. Chatham Jennings is his daughter. John Smith died in Ohio, whither he had removed. Reuben and Samuel lived and died in Washington County, and their children are now residents of East Bethlehem township.http://www.rootsweb.com/~pabedfor/queries97jul.html
I am descended from James Smith (1780-1861) from Bedford Co, PA. He is buried on Gideon's Farm near Sideling Hill Creek, 2 miles south of Purcell, Pa. He married Naomi Dineen from Whips Cove, PA She was 74 in 1850 census. Their children were John Smith; Elisha Smith; Hester ; Priscilla; Harrison; J. Ollie; Sarah; Matthew; Gideon; Emmanuel;Harvey and Morgan. John Smith was "Preacher John" and established several churches in the Bedford area. Gideon was my ancestor--married Mary Jane Anderson of Jamestown, VA. One of their children-Danford Blair Smith b. 1855 was a schoolteacher in Bedford. He married Mary Francis Miller. I am also researching Mary Francis Miller's line which goes in this way; Her father was Christian Miller. His father was Lewis Miller who was
descended from Christian Miller of Clearville. His father was Christian Mueller from Hesse Kasel Germany. Any info please e-mail AKWILTR123@aol.comhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~paluzern/bios/sibios.htm
