64. Abner Long

possible!!!...Abner LONG Sex:Polly 29 Jan 1829 KENTUCKY, WHITLEY COUNTY

This is from the 1882 History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Fairview Precinct. This history is not really reliable, as there are many errors, but perhaps it will give you some clues. The time the author is discussing is "about 1829." "About this time came the Long family. There were three brothers of them, namely, Abner, Joseph, and John, who settled on the northeast quarter of Section 22. They afterwards separated, Joseph settling on section 15, on land now owned by J.M. Harper, and John settling on the land now owned by D.Cable. Abner being a "potter" and a maker of earthenware, floated about from place to place, plying his trade, until 1840, when they all "pulled up stakes" and moved to Missouri, leaving no descendants in this county." p. 152

Illinois history Book refers to brothers of Abner, Joseph and John Long showing up in Bond County, IL around 1830. Abner is referred to as a potter, moving around, while Joseph and John settle down. Book also states all three brothers left for MO abt 1840. None of the brothers show up in Bond County, IL census of 1830 or 1840.

Abner shows up in 1850 Greene County, MO census and then 1860 Stone County, MO census.

The Joseph shows both parents from SC and he himself from KY. Abner shows being born in N or SC. It is assumed he is from NC because he ws a potter. Abner would have been about 6-10 years older than this Joseph. Is this his brother?

William, the believed son of John, shows both parents being born TN. Is it possible that Longs traveled from SC >NC >TN>KY>IL>MO/AR??

Could your Nancy LONG be the daughter of James Riley LONG (b. 1790 Whitley Co.KY-1845 AR) and Laura HENSON (1792 SC-1840 AR) ?

Legend has it that John Henry was taken by his mother to Freeport, IL after the war - but is it possible he was taken to Freeport, MO (a suburb of St Louis instead). Marquis Hull, who had custody of John Henry in 1870, showed his address as Pike Co, IL when joining the military. Had lived and returned to live in Miller Co, MO.In 1870 Hull is shown in PhelpsCo census with John Henry. Pike Co is across the river from St Louis.

66. John James Bobbitt ^

appears in 1850 Franklin County, AR census

Possible match for 1830 and 1840 Fayette County, TN. Need to check 1830 Fayette County. 1840 matches except Sarah should be older and there are 2 extra girl children under 5 than we know about in 1850 Franklin County census.

If this in fact is Retina's father, she appears as 13 in 1850, therefore putting her at 15 when she married Joseph Calvin.

David,
The Bobbitt Family in America by John W. Bobbitt mentions John James Bobbitt the first son of Drury (IV) and Rebecca (Burrows) Bobbitt born 1807 North Carolina. The second son Green W. Bobbitt born 1811 is my ancestor. I have found John J. Bobbitt in the Fayette Co Deed Book in Dec 1840 regarding a trust deed. In the 1840 Fayette Co Census John J is head of household with a wife and 2 sons and 4 daughters.
Then he is not mentioned in the 1850 Census here. So I am sure John J. came to Fayette Co with his brother. I think he went to AR.
Who were his daughters, their husbands and son that you know? Are you related to the Bobbitts?

John J. Bobbitt was a brother of Green W. Bobbitt of Fayette County, Tennessee. Who ever gave the census information about John made a mistake. John was born in North Carolina, not Kentucky. John J. and his brother Green W. were sons of Drury and Rebecca Bobbitt of Moore County North Carolina.

Green W. and his brother John James were listed in the 1840 census records in Fayette County, Tennessee

From Goodspeed's, History of Northwest Arkansas, page 1146: D. K. and Lydia E. (Adkins) Elkins, were natives of Virginia. The family moved to Vernon County, MO., before 1850, (as actually after 13 July 1850) and D. K. died there in 1856. In connection with farming he was a mechanic and cabinetmaker, and worked at those trades. Eight of his eleven children are still living: Furibin, of Washington County; J. K., of California; Mrs. Nancy E. Kimes, of this county; Mrs. Phoebe Kimes, of this county; Mrs. Lucinda Reed, of Barry County, Mo.; Mrs. Louisa A. Kimes, of this county; Leander and L. W. Elkins, of Livingston, Ill. The grandparents, Jacob and Phoebe Adkins, were of English descent. The former was born in Jamestown Colony, Va., in 1758, and died in 1862, and the latter was born about 1768. They moved from Jamestown Colony to New River, and lastly to Wayne County, Va., where they engaged in farming.

Sometime after 1850 (on Wayne County census in 1850) Darby and Lydia left VA (WV) and with their family moved on to Vernon County, Missouri. Very little is known of their Missouri stay as just six years later Darby died (9 Sept. 1856). Sometime after this and prior to 1860 Lydia moved her family to Crawford County, Arkansas. She appears on the 1860 Crawford County census.

In 1855 Thomas shows as defaulting/ the father Thomas? is gone by 1854 or doesnt own land (check 1850 census)

Thomass K joins 35th Georgia Company C with Harbard and Francis Marion Cook. Harbard appears in 1850 Campbell CO census. Francis M was Harbard's son acoording the 1850 census. While no tie can be found between Thomas and Habard, yet, they did join the same day and deserted the same day. Based on the 1850 census it appears all the Cook's in the area are related to the elder James and Elizabeth Cook, James born in SC and Elizabeth born in NC. It is extremely doubtful James is Thomas father as he appeasrs in 1840 Campbell CO but not in 1830 Hall..although there were NO Cooks in Campbell CO in 1830.

The theory that Thomas Cook shows in Hall, then Lumpkin because of border changes is not true - no Cook appears in Lumpkins first census of 1834 - they moved there because of gold or land lottery

Portions of the following paragraphs about gold mines, gold prospecting and panning are from an article entitled "Georgia Gold" by Charles A. Overbey in Gems and Minerals magazine and is reprinted by permission of Gems and Minerals. Prior work by Robert G. Cook is acknowledged.
Gold was discovered in North Carolina in 1799; then came discoveries in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Virginia. The gold-bearing strip was traced by pioneers from the North Carolina Piedmont into the Cherokee Territory. But, not until 1828 or 1829 did the major gold boom start - when news spread that gold had been discovered in North Georgia on Cherokee land.
A few months after the announcement of the discovery, hundreds of men were searching for the metal; and within a year, thousands of miners had descended into Georgia to seek the golden treasure. In 1830 a U.S. Army major described the motley appearance of the "whites, Indians, half-breeds and Negroes, boys of fourteen and old men of seventy" who sought their fortunes in the river beds and hillsides of Georgia.

Thanks for replying to my query....

The James A. Grizzle, Jr. (born in 1844) I descend from was the son of A. J.
Grizzle and Jane Jackson. I've not had the time to do much research of these
lines. From what I have read, these folks descended from John and Sarah
Taylor Grizzle who came to North Georgia from Rutherford Co., NC.

Any information you would like to share on this family would be greatly
appreciated. My main focus right now is on the children and grandchildren of
James A. Grizzle, Jr. who lived in Lumpkin County, GA 1880s-1920s.

THANKS!

David:
You're right. This is one James GRIZZLE.
James & Mary's daughter, Washington Jane I GRIZZLE married Thomas Kimsey COOKE.
The initial "I" (eye) is after "Jane."
The census takers were sometimes illiterate.
Probably drunk too, hehe.

Another Warren County official web site has this marriage in their county on the same day. Warren is SE of Lumpkin and they Gold Rush could have brought the family north. There is a Willis Grizzle in the county in 1820 that shows Willis being 45+, 1 son 10-16, 1 son 16-18, 2 sons 16-26, a daughter 10-16, and a female 16-18. Also 4 males slaves and 1 female. By 1840 the Grizzle familes are gone from Warren County. Unable to find any Rays' living nearby in 1820. James does not appear in 1834 Lumpkin census, and have not yet checked 1830 Warren. In 1840 he appears in Lumpkin near Thomas Cook but no Ray's nearby.

Note: James R. Darden is a great grandson of Mills Darden.

Mills Darden, born in North Carolina in 1798. Left North Carolina and settled in Henderson County. He bought the Ranking Carver Farm near Life, 5 miles west of Lexington and lived there until his death. He was married twice. The first to Miss Cox. The second to Miss Cheek and each marriage brought four children each. His last wife weighed 99 lbs. When he died it took seventeen (17) Pall Bearers to carry the casket. It took 100 ft. of lumber to build his casket. There is a nice black top road to the grave where he and his two wives are buried and his slaves were buried on the farm. Question: Was Carter County ever part of North Carolina?
Answer: Yes but not as Carter County. It was part of the "Washington District" organized in 1775. In 1777, the district became Washington County, NC. Carter County was later formed from Washington County.
Carter County is located in East Tennessee, one of the state's three "grand divisions." Carter County, TN, was formed June 1, 1796, from Washington County, TN. Johnson County was created from parts of Carter County in 1836.

Washington County, TN, originally came under the jurisdiction of North Carolina. In 1772 settlers living south of the Holston River, on the Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers, within the boundaries of the North Carolina colony, organized the Watauga Association, giving America its first written constitution. In 1775 the Wataugans changed their name to "Washington District." The main settlements in the Washington District were W atauga, Carter's Valley, and Nolichucky.
The settlers petitioned for annexation with North Carolina. In 1777 the North Carolina legislature changed the name of Washington District to Washington County, NC. Included within the boundaries of the county was most of present-day Tennessee.
The State of Franklin
In 1784, North Carolina ceded its western (overmountain) lands to the United States to pay its part of the Revolutionary War debts with the provision that a new state would be formed from these new lands. The same men who formed the Watauga Association did not wait for the formation of the new state. They formed the State of Frankland (Franklin) and chose John Sevier as governor.
Both the State of Fran klin and North Carolina's Washington County claimed the overmountain country and both had functional governments that issued marriage licenses, probate wills and deeds. North Carolina appointed Col. John Tipton as senator. The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin in 1788 at Tipton's farm was the death knell for the State of Franklin.
Southwest Territory
North Carolina ceded the state's western lands to the federal government in 1790, forming the "Territory of th e Unites States, South of the River Ohio" (Southwest Territory). The area included all of that which became the state of Tennessee. President George Washington appointed William Blount as governor. Blount lived with the William Cobb family at Rocky Mount (in Sullivan County near the Washington County line) for a short time before moving to Knoxville. Census taken in 1795 indicated a population of 77,262. A vote for statehood was taken and the State of Tennessee was admitted into the Union by the U.S. Legi slature on June 1, 1796.

This family has been created as a means of grouping the ARNOLD
families who lived in Johnson County, Tennessee, in the early
1800s. The approximate dates of birth for these ARNOLDs is such
that it appears that they are siblings. It is possible that
these ARNOLD families are related to John ARRENDELL and his
wife Mary. However, they were not mentioned in his will, and it
appears that the ARRENDELLs took great care to mention their
children in their wills. In viewing the 1830 Carter County
Census, which included all of Johnson County (founded in 1836),
it also appears that more of the ARNOLD families lived in
Carter County, while all of the ARRENDELLs lived in what would
become Johnson County.

Early in the nineteenth century, William and Mary Randall Skidmore came from Virginia and settled in Perry township, about two miles south of the present site of West Mansfield. It was to the north edge of this settlement that the McDonald family came in 1835. The following year Josiah and Lydia Whitaker came and settled on the banks of Mill creek just south of the cross roads. A one-room school was soon built in the area, and it was known as the "Skidmore School"

Member of the Fairfax and Goose Creek Monthly Meeting as a Randall and when married, Mary Skidmore was disowned for marriage contrary to discipline on 9 Jul 1796.

another source says "Mary Randall, born October 07, 1774 in PA; died November 01, 1853 in Logan Co., OH. "

also source says born 19 July 1772

Mary RANDALL b 1772; d 1853 Logan Co., OH; m 1796 Bedford Co., VA (by one source and Campbell Co., VA by another source) to William SKIDEMORE, b 1775; d 1854 Logan Co., OH. The SKIDMORE's came to America in an early day[?] from Hollland and settled in Virginia, Bedford Co., and its vicinity. Resided in VA until 1804 when they moved with 5 children to Columbiana co., OH, thence 1816 to Logan Co., OH.

102. Samuel Ballinger ^

also have a source giving dob of 10 Feb 1770 and death 15 Nov 1808. Same marriage date. This source also gives an entirely different ancestry. The one I used is much more documented and proveable and also makes more sense. Either way... they tie together again at Henry. The other source goes Henry > Henry J >William > Samuel. My problem with this is Henry J, according to the paperwork heads for NC, where most of his kids are born. Last child is born in PA, and he shows dieing in NJ.

Samuel's tombstone shows him dying at age 75

105. Betsy Gibbs ^

Possibility
Elizabeth GIBBS
Sex:parents of Betsey Gibbs who was born in 1775 in Sudbury,Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Betsey married Joel Knight who died in 1817. She married 2nd Rev. Williard in New Hampshire
in 1829. Betsey died in 1870 at age 95yrs and 10mos in Marlborough, Chester County, New Hampshire. I need proof as to who her parents names are. Thanks A. G. Cloud agcloud@msn.com.

Clue?
Jonathan Gibbs5 (Micah4, Job3, John2, Thomas1) married 29 May 1776 Hannah Clarke, daughter of James Clarke. Jonathan is called *of Wareham* in Plymouth vital records.
Jonathan had a son James 2 Aug 1783 in Wareham; James married Martha SWIFT, daughter of Elisha SWIFT and Martha Briggs. Does anyone know where they were married? She was *of Plymouth*.
