Ancestors of David Allen Long

32. *Joseph Calvin Long

Joseph Calvin Long enrolled in the 24th MO Inf (Union) Co I on July 18, 1861. Private. Shows as deserted from Rolla camp Dec 1861 thru Feb 62. Reinstated without trial as it appeared he was confined by enemy. In actuality, family legend has it Joseph went home to cut wood and ready the family for the winter. If this is true, it might be an assumption Abner had died and Joseph felt compelled to do this. On the march to the Battle of Pea Ridge, Joseph died of typhiod fever/smallpox in Cassville.

For speculative reasons, I believe Joseph Calvin brought his mother and children and others back to Rolla with him.

http://www.geocities.com/yankdoodle_99/CoHI.html Roster to Company I 24th MO

on the march into AR before Battle of Pea Ridge, the last time the regiment was near Cassville was Feb 15th as it pursued Price's army south. By the 16th the forces were in AR where they would stay until after the battle. On March 18th, the regiment encamped at Keetsville, MO near Cassville.

37. Washington Jane Grizzle

In the 1850 Lumpkin County GA census we have found the following family. We feel it is very possibly a Grizzle family, although the census taker shows Gaswell. Does anyone recognize this family as Grizzle's.
James Grizzle married Mary Ray on 28 Dex 1826 in Lumkin County, GA.

poss uncle?
Looking for information on Larkin Grizzle. Was born 1825 N.C. married Elizabeth Presely in GA. My gggrandfather was George Washington Grizzle Larkin's 2nd son born in Lumpkin July 6, 1845. His siblings were as follows.
William D b.1843
George W. b.1845
James b.1854
Margaret b.1856
Andrew J. b.1859
Celie b.1865
Looking for connection to other Grizzles in Lumpkin. They moved to Dickson, TN just before the war between the states.
I am the great, great, grandson of George Washington Grizzle, who lived to be 104 years and died in Holdenville, Oklahoma. His family records indicate that he served in the Union Army, Tennessee 10th Cavalry, and was a color bearer. His son was named Larkin, born 1876 in Dickson County, Tennessee.
I don't know much about the original Larkin although Larkin, G.W., and William Grizzle are listed in the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" as having served (or identified with) the Tennessee 19th Infantry.
Larkin is listed as the head of household in the 1860 Census of McMinn County, Tennessee. I have not been able to find his location in 1870 Census Records, but the Census Index of 1880 shows George W. in Marion County, Tennessee.
I think Lumpkin Co. was Cherokee land prior to 1832. Two Grizzles are listed in "The Cherokee Land Lottery of GA" by Smith (1991). James Grizzell was in Henry Co. John Grizzle was in Habersham, which is next to Lumpkin. Where were the county lines then? (actually was formed from Cherokee County in 1832, whuch had been formed from Cherokee land in 1830 -also parts of Hall and Habersham Co's )

another poss uncle?
I have a copy of a deed that I found in the records in the Clerk of Court's office in Lumpkin County, dated 15 May 1841 in which John Grizzle deeded some personal property to his eleven (11) children. In the deed, the children are named. These children were:
Melinda (married Reuben Butler)
Lewis Madison (married Susannah Jackson)
Andrew J. (married Jane Jackson)
Elizabeth (married Samuel Gouge...now spelled Gooch; after Elizabth's death, Samuel married Caroline Grizzle, d/o Andrew J.and Jane Grizzle)
Eliza (married John Lee)
Polly McClure Grizzle
James A. ("Jim Art" married Zelley Jackson first and late in life married Malinda Helton Pruitt)
Sarah A. (married Thomas Lee)
Elvira (married James Gouge/Gooch)
Nancy J.(married Aaron Watkins)
William C.
All of the female children are listed as Grizzle.
Lewis Madison, Andrew J. and Jim Art married Jackson sisters whose parents were Eli and Tabitha Hodge Jackson. Sarah and Eliza married brothers.

VALENTINE WORLEY, farmer, Section 35, Township 6, Range 16, P. O. Larkin, was born in Virginia, in 1801. In 1820, he went to Tennessee, where he remained until 1835, moving to Putnam County, Ind., going to Pike county, Ill., in 1843, and 1850 to Jo Daviess County, Iowa, and in 1866 he moved to his present location in Jackson County, Kan., where he owns 300 acres of land. He was married in Carter County, Tenn., in 1827 to Miss Elizabeth Arnold, and has raised a family of nine children - James, Henry, Rebecca, Michael, John, Andrew, Jacob, David and Elizabeth. During his residence in Tennessee he raised a company of militia and was for many years the captain of the company. During the war of the Rebellion all of his sons responded to the call for volunteers and all served their term of enlistment. He, as well as his family, have been connected with the Methodist Church for some years.

Worley's in Carter County before ours (maybe related)
On April 9, 1795, the General Assembly divided Washington County, and erected the eastern part into Carter County, which then included all of Johnson and part of Unicoi. The court of pleas and quarter sessions was organized on the 4th of July, 1796, at the house of Samuel Tipton. The magistrates present were Andrew Greer, Landon Carter, Nathaniel Taylor, David McNabb, Lochonah Campbell, Guttredge Garland, John Vaught, Joseph Lands and Reuben Thornton. They qualified in the following manner: Landon Carter administered the oaths to Andrew Greer, who in turn administered them to Col. Carter, and the remainder of the court, The following officers were then elected: Godfrey Carriger, register; Joseph Lands, ranger; George Williams, clerk; John Macun, trustee Nathaniel Taylor, sheriff, and Charles Colyer, Aaron Cunningham, Samuel Musgrove, Thomas Whilson, Solomon Campbell and John Robertson, constables.
The next term of the court(1796) was also held at Tipton's. At that time Nathaniel Taylor and Nathaniel Folsom were allowed $50 for laying off the town for the seat of justice. The sheriff returned the following venire facias; William Dugger, George Ingle, John Stover, John Fentress, Mathias Wagoner, Levi Loyd, Jeremiah Campbell, William Pugh, William Davis, William Dugger, Jules Dugger, Joseph Ford, John Worley, Stephen Redman, John Poland, James Range, Michael Hyder, John Peoples and Robert Lusk. The last ten were constituted the grand jury.

Dear David:

I am very interested in your posting on Genforum concerning Margaret E. Humphrey and a marriage to a Longfellow. I would like to know what your sources are concerning Margaret.

I have been searching for months for the parents of Sarah, ca 1862 and William ca 1865 Longfellow. They appear on the 1870 Iowa census with the Josiah Rominger family. Mrs Rominger is Mary Ann Humphrey. I think your info is the connection I have been looking for. I am looking for any information you have. I also believe the Longfellow husband is Ransom Longfellow, son of Tilghman Longfellow and Mariah Tharp. Ransom was a member of the 30th Calvary Iowa. He is down as a deserter in 1864.

Can't wait to hear what you might have.

46. David Gilbert ^

was David a step-son of David Gilbert...notice his mother is pregnant before they are married. By him, or ex-husband Barton?

Gilbert
David was married 3 times, #1 Freelove Trowbridge, #2 Elizabeth Sweet, #3 Sarah Jane Taylor. 16 kids
total. Wm, Walter, Rosalia (?), Sarah and Ann, by Freelove Trowbridge, David by Eliz. Sweet, and
Elizabeth, Rozalia(?) Lucy, Henry, Josephine, Martha m. Harley/Harlin Brooks s/o Dexter and
Eliz.(Lamkin, sp.) and Mary E. m. Edward J. Ives s/o John and Luann(Brooks), Daniel b. 1861 m. Libbie
Scott b. 1866. David was born 26 Oct. 1808 died 30 Oct. 1892 of blood poisoning. Born in Baltimore,
Maryland. I was given birthdate of 1831 for Sarah Jane Taylor. 20

Cathy gave me census records, copies of marriage records and death records and some obits. I only spent
about 4 hours with her. So you can imagine how my mind was spinning when I left there.
According to the article on David, his parents were David and Jemima (Pococ) Gilbert, the former an
Irishman by birth and the latter a native of Baltimore. 8 yrs. old when left Maryland and came to Ohio,
settling in vicinity of Marietta, Washington County. Raised there then settled in Northwestern Territory,
40 miles west of Ft. Wayne, Ind., but after 4 yrs returned to Ohio. Then was in Howard County, Iowa for
a brief time. On 20th of June, 1860 he was on the Republican River in Clay County, Kan. 3 times
married, children by each. Freelove Trowbridge of Washington County, Ohio left 5 children Wm., m.
Melissa Roach, Walter, Rosalia, Sarah and Ann (died lung fever 7 Jan 1894). Elizabeth Sweet of
St. Joseph County, Mich., died leaving one son, David. At the time of up to Clay Center again.

My GGrandmother Sarah Jane (Gilbert) Worley lived in Lyon Co, KS. She had a brother named George who, I have, as born abt 1835 in OH. This may be too old to be your George, since he didn't get married until 1874, but thought it might give you something to go on. Sarah Jane and George, along with several others were children of David Gilbert, b. abt 1808 in MD (according to census). I think my Sarah was born in IL. David was married more than once. I do not have the mothers name. I'm still working on that. David was married also to Rebecca Jane Taylor, but am pretty sure this is not the mother of Sarah and George and 3 other children. David ended up in Clay Co, KS, where he lived until he died. My Sarah, at one time lived in Lebo, KS, which is just a few miles from Hartford. She later moved to Allen, Lyon Co, KS, where she lived until she died. I don't have a lot of info, but I would be glad to share what I have, if you think you might be able to connect. If this is not your George, he may have even had a son George. Hope this helps.

Article announcing her death state she was born Trumbull County, OH, age 12 moved to PA, near Waynesborough, (Chester County?...or Waynesboro in Franklin County near Gettysburg?)where she married David Gilbert. From there they moved to Keokuk, IA in 1853 and 2 years later moved to Clay CO, KS (Chester Co near Phildelphia)

LEVI REA, farmer, a prominent pioneer of Liberty Township, was born in Logan County, Ohio, June 5, 1815. He is a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Dickinson) Rem, who removed from West-Virginia to Logan County, Ohio, in 1808, and settled near East Liberty, subsequently removing to Jefferson Township where Mr. Rem bought 460 acres of land. The Indians and wild animals were numerous, and many were the difficulties which this pioneer encountered an passed through. Mr. Rea was twice called into service during the war of 1812. He was a poor man in his earlier life, but by his untiring energy and industry accumulated a great deal of property, and at his death in January 1845, was one of the wealthiest men in Logan County. He left eleven children by his first and two by his last wife. Levi is the fifth child by his first wife. He was reared on the old homestead and received his education in the schools which were held in log cabins. He was often associated with the Indian to boys, and indulged with them in their hilarious amusements. In 1842. he removed to Liberty Township and purchased 100 acres of his large and well improved farm Bat seven acres of this purchase had been cleared. He cleared it up from its original condition, and made additions to it till his farm now contains 500 acres of land. From his fourteenth year till of age. He had charge of his father's farm, and conducted it successfully through these years. All of Mr. Rea's present property is the fruit of his own labor and management, he having embarked in life a poor man and made all that he possesses by his own exertions. His marriage occurred February 28, 1839, with Lydia, daughter of James and Mary Newman, and a native of Sussex County, N. J., where she was born October 14, 1812. To them were born seven children, of whom two are living, viz.: David A., born July 15, 1846, married Mary J. Glascoe; and Gertrude, born October 3, 1848, wife of James 0. Thomas. Mary E., William F., Ruth E., James H. and Jehiel G. are deceased. Mr. Rea and wife are member-- of the Church of Christ.

DAVID A. REA, farmer, P. O. Raymond, only living son of Levi and Lydia Rea, was born on the home farm in Liberty Township, July 15, 1846. he remained at home till November 24, 1863, when he enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Twenty-first Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served under Gen. Sherman, and participated in the following battles: Tunnel Hill, Resaca, Rome, Kenesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, Atlanta and all the engagements on the Atlanta campaign and "march to the sea," including Savannah. He was afterward engaged at Bentonville and Goldsboro, N. C., after which he marched to Washington, D. C. He was honorably discharged July 17, 1865. He returned home and was a member of the firm of Sterling & Rea, merchants of Newton for a time, then resumed farming which he has since followed. In 1878, he took possession of the farm he now occupies. He was married November 5, 1868, to Mary J., daughter of Benjamin and Lydia Glascoe. Mrs. Rea was born in Clark County, Ohio, December 15, 1844. One daughter was born to this union-Lydia, born September 17, 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Rea are associated with the Disciples Church. Politically he is a Republican. He owns a farm of 100 acres, and is engaged in rearing short-horned cattle, Spanish merino sheep and Poland-China hogs.

52. Nathan Haven Knight ^

Moved to MO in 1857

In what was once known as Caffeyville, MO there stands a cemetery called Twilight Cemetery. There were two large families of KNight's in Laclede, including the NH group of Nathan and another from Kentucky. Also in this area was the extremely large family of Robert Day from Tennessee. These families were so large that they and their descendants made up the crux of this small community. Thus the name Twilight - Knights and Days.

In her book Hardy and Hardies, the author states Hardy married Nathan H Knight of Roxbury, NH - Look in Roxbury. Roxbury notes...looked in Vermont Atlas at Orlando Public Library. Dublin is NW of Dublin between
Keene and Harrisville. Harrisville and Chesham are due north of Marlborough and Dublin is east of Marlborough. In another old book at Orlando Library- Roxbury down't even show up. Interesting notes - #1 Population of Roxbury
in 1980 was only 190 people. Dublin had 1300 in 1980. Also in Dublin, I find in the SE section a Hardy Hill and Hardy Hill Road. Interesting since Knight married a Hardy.

In 1830 NH census the Knight's listed...no Joel's in entire state!!
Amos - Alstead, Artemas - Westmore, Benjamin - Westmore, Broughton -Keene, Cutter - Marlow, Elijah - Surry, Gardner - Westmore, Ira - Marlow, John - Fitzwill, Jonathan - Westmore, Jonathan - Stoddard, Joseph -Stoddard, Luther - Westmore, Samuel - Fitzwell, Stephen - Rindge, Stephen -Marlow, Talmon - Troy, Thayer - Westmore, Wilder - Stoddard, Note
Moses Hardy shows in Dublin as reported!!
In 1840 NH census the - Nathan shows up in Roxbury of Cheshire County.
Others -
Amos - Alstead, Artemas - Westmore, Benjamin - Westmore, Cutler -Marlow, David - Alstead, Elijah - Keene, Franklin - Alstead, Gardner -Westmore, Ira - Marlow, Jonathan - Westmore, Joseph - Stoddard, Josiah -
Dublin, Luther - Westmore, Nathaniel - Marlow, Polly - Marlow, Stephen -Rindge, Talmon - Troy, Thayer - Keene, Thomas - Troy, Wilder - Stoddard,Nathan - Roxbury(this is our Nathan as reported above), -

Need stronger evidence that Joel is Nathan's dad. Don't think so! Note a Levi Willard marries a Irene Knight in Dublin NH Sep 1840. If Levi was named for this man... then Irene should be affiliated w/family somehow. Is this Irene, who is Nathan's siter?

There was a group of Haven's living in Mass, with Nathan being a popular first name.

Dublin, Cheshire County, NH Description

CHESHIRE CO. Dublin is situated on the height of land between Connecticut and Merrimac Rivers. Its streams are small; those on the west side run into the Ashuelot, those on the east into Contoocook River. The rain which falls on the roof of the church is shared by those rivers. There is a pond near the middle of the town called Centre Pond, one mile in length, and about the same breadth. A large portion of the Grand Monadnock lies in the northwest part of Dublin, and near the centre of the town is Breed's Mountain. Monadnock was formerly covered with a growth of small timber and shrubbery, but fires having run over it at different times, it presents little more than ragged rocks. Between the rocks, however, there are low whortleberry bushes, which produce great quantities of fruit of a very rich flavor. The season for ripening is the latter part of August, and to those who ascend the summit at this season they are peculiarly grateful. This mountain is not difficult of access. The view from its summit is sublime. Its height is 3,718 feet about the level of the sea. The land in this town in general is much better
for grazing than tillage.
The late Rev. Edward Sprague bequeathed nearly 8,000 dollars for the support of public schools, the annual interest of which is to be applied to this object. He also left the town $5,000, the interest of which, paid quarterly, is to be applied to the support of an ordained Congregational minister, who shall statedly preach in Dublin.
Boundaries. North by Nelson and Hancock, east by Peterborough, south by Jaffrey, and west by Marlborough and Roxbury. First Settlers. John Alexander, Henry Strongman, and Wm. Strong, in 1762.
First Ministers. Rev. Joseph Farrar, ordained in 1772; dismissed in 1776. Rev. Edward Sprague, ordained in 1777; died in 1817.
Productions of the Soil. Indian corn, 3,680 bushels; potatoes, 34,028 bushels; hay, 2,646 tons; wool, 6,294 lbs.; maple sugar, 17,779 pounds. Distances. Ten miles east by south from Keene, and fifty south-west from Concord.

The chief towns in Cheshire county are Charleston and Keene. The superior court
and the courts of common pleas sit in these towns alternately, and the probate court holds
three sessions in each of these towns every year. This county sends 35 representatives to
the state legislature, and there is a gaol in each of the shire towns.

ROXBURY, in Cheshire county, was incorporated in 1812, and is bounded N. by
Sullivan, E. by Nelson and Dublin, S. by Marlborough, and W. by Keene, comprising
about 6,000 acres. This town was incorporated subsequent to the last census and of
course its population has not been estimated. There is here a meeting house, a grain mill,
a sawmill, and a clothing mill.

DUBLIN - a township in Cheshire, incorporated in 1761, and now containing 1,184
inhabitants. It is bounded N. by Nelson and Hancock, S. by Jaffrey, E. by Peterborough,
and W. by Marlborough and a part of Roxbury, and contains 26,560 acres, 600 of which
are water. centre pond, a few rods S.W. of the meeting house is 300 rods in length and
160 in width. North pond is about 400 rods long and 140 wide. There are also several
smaller ponds in this place. A branch of the Ashuelot river and two branches of the
Contoocook have their rise in Dublin. The former falls into the Connecticut, and the latter
into the Merrimack. In the southerly part of this town is situated the grand Monadnock
mountain. Dublin has 6 corn mills, 8 sawmills, 1 mill for dressing cloth, 1 carding
machine, a distillery, and 11 school houses.
The first minister here was the Rev. Joseph Farrar, a Congregationalist, who was
ordained on the 10th of June, 1772, and dismissed in June, 1716. Rev. Edward Sprague,
the present minister, was settled over the same church in 1777. There is also a Baptist
church here, over which Elder Elijah Willard was ordained in 1794. Each of these
societies has a meeting house. Dublin is composed of two small villages beside many
scattered houses.

My maiden name is Margo Fletcher, my father was George Edward Fletcher, b. 1913 in Lebanon (Laclede) Mo., died 1953 in Chicago, Il. His parents (my grandparents) were Jay Isaac Fletcher and Belle Adams. She was born in 1875 in Plad, Mo., died 1968 in San Jose, Ca. Her parents (my great-grandparents) were Thomas Benton "Bud" Adams, b. 1842 Grundy Co. Tn., d. 1922 Buffalo (Dallas Co.) Mo. He married Nancy Delilah Judd in 1866, they had 8 children: William Riley Adams, 1867-1949, Mary Ellen "Sis" Adams, 1868-1936, Phoebe Caroline "Carrie" Adams 1871-1929, Belle Adams 1875-1968, Nora Cordelia Adams 1877-1960, Dona Alice Adams 1881-1969, Anna Lee Adams 1884-1932 and John Madison "Matt" Adams 1889-1972. Thomas' parents (my great-great-grandparents) were Lazarus Elisha Adams, b. 1808 Grundy Co. Tn., died abt. 1863 in Lebanon, Laclede Co. Mo. He married Ellender Sheppard abt. 1827, they had 11 children: William Riley Adams 1828-1855, I.A. (or F.A.) Adams, 1833-?, F.C. (or T.C.) Adams, 1835-?, David Adams 1836-?, James Frank Adams, 1839-1889, Thomas "Bud" Adams, 1842-1922, Smith Wesley Adams 1844-1921, Philadelphia "Delfy" Adams 1848-?, P. Adams 1850-?, and John A. Adams, 1853-1917. I don't have much information on Lazarus, he is somewhat of a mystery, he was executed in the Civil War and nobody in my family seems to want to speak about him. I know this is a long shot, but when I saw both Fletcher and Adams surnames in one query, I wondered if we're from the same lines. Please let me hear from you.

By 1860 family in Mercer Co,OH- by 1870 to Jay Co, IN

Research indicates that Alvah MURPHY was born in Darke County, Ohio, about 1840 to ? and Nancy ? MURPHY. From census records Alvah's siblings were probably John, Sarah, & David. It is believed that his mother, Nancy, married John FISHER, the son of John and Ruth MATHERS FISHER of Butler Co., OH, in Darke Co., OH, in1849. By 1860 Nancy, Alvah and his new wife Anne PHILLIPS were in Mercer Co., OH. According to Mercer County records, Alvah and Anne were married on 4 Nov 1858. Alvah & Anne remained in Mercer County until sometime in 1870 when I am told they moved to Jay County. I have no further information on Nancy MURPHY FISHER. I would like to learn more about this family, especially information about Alvah's mother Nancy. Who was her first husband? He may have been the son of Benjamin MURPHY (1781-1852) of Darke Co. What was her maiden name? I would appreciate any help and would be willing to share my research. Thanks. Dianne
