| This
page was made to help the beginning genealogist understand the potential
of the internet. It is not intended to be a learning tool about how to do
genealogy, but instead link you to the numerous places you can possibly find
information that will help you find that elusive ancestor. In many cases,
you will find that someone has already researched "factions" of your ancestry,
which will allow you to work on the more elusive names. Every generation
you go back nearly doubles the names you will be looking for. Truly, we are
all related at some point. Ok, you have a name you are looking for. Hopefully, you have tapped every known relative for information. The farther back you have, the better your chances of finding the information you need on the net. Below you will find links to various sites I personally recommend you check. Concentrate on one name at a time. Trying to check to many names at any one time will confuse you. Do you have a program to store your genealogy information? There are many for sale, but I strongly recommend you never spend a dime when you don't have to. As you will see on this page, I am the "King of Cheap". The LDS church, known more commonly as the Mormon Church, is the largest single genealogy agency in the world. Their practice makes genealogy an important part of their faith. Throughout their 100+ year history and still active today, they have gathered information from around the world and stored it into databases, which are now available over the internet to the genealogist. But first, you need a program. The LDS also offers one of the most commonly used programs among genealogist's....and it is totally free. It is a wonderfully easy program to learn, and stores your information easily. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some of the other pay programs, but in time you will find you will never use them anyway. To download this program, follow the following links. The URL for downloading changes periodically, so let me take you to it from the first page. From page one, you will see on the left "Order Family History Resources". Hit this link, and then you will see some choices including "Software Downloads - Free". Push this and you will see various programs. The one you will need is Personal Ancestral File 4.0 English version. Push it and you are on your way to your free program. Now here is a hint - You will need to register to download the program. Putting your real name and address will just about guarantee a couple of those nice young missionaries will stop by and say hi. Now that you know how to get to the program, here is the link to take you to the first page. Family Search When you have your new free program all set up and ready to go, let's go to page two and learn what the internet offers you. Page Two |
