More state/county - again, lightly used but worth a shot
Mailing list - if you want to be part of the genealogy hunt, there is nothing like joining a mailing list. There are mailing lists for names, states, counties, you name it..there is a mailing list that you can join for free. You can then post your enquiry to the entire list, or just watch other enquires being posted. Be forewarned though. This is free and while some lists are not very active, others are very active and will fill up your mailbox daily. You can join and quit a list as easy as one e-mail.

Some wonderful sites every genealogist should visit.

Helpful Hints

Do you have the name of someone you think may have fought  for a state in the Civil War, but don't know where? There is a pay site on the net that offers a free search. The problem with it is it will only tell you "if" a name is listed in their database for a particular state. It makes you pay to find out which regiment they fought for. It is up to you if you want to take the chance on ordering records for someone that may, or may not be your relative. And if you know the regiment, you can order your own records from the government for a better price (here is how). This is more of a rumor confirmer, or denying program to use. If you find the name of your ancestor, or a possible match, you can then go back to the county they lived and find out which regiment's formed from that area. Here is the link... but I don't give the service a recommendation except for the free scan. Civil War Database Enquiry. More free Civil War Research Tools
