Veterans of the Civil War    Dallas County, MO early 1890's

I can lay no claim to any known relatives in this pictutre, but felt it was so valuable ,it should be on the net for others to see. I am not sure where I got the copy of this picture...believe it was off a Buffalo, MO calendar. Have  the name of Dorotha Jacobsen written as donating. If you recognize an ancestor, please let me know and I will be glad to make a note here for others. If you have the original, please let me know, and I will give you the proper credit.

Hello, David. Saw your picture of the Civil War Veterans of Dallas Co. I strongly suspect my ggrandfather, perhaps also my gggrandfather are among them, but have no means to identify them. Please inform me if anyone else identifies any Wilkersons.

Here is a piece of info I picked up which may add to the interest of the picture. Doing research in Sp. Greene Co Library I was reading in "Dallas Co. MO History, Jan 1975". There was a reunion of The soldiers of Co. I 16th MO Cavalry. This reunion was reported in the Buffalo Reflex on Aug. 23 1894. In this book is a list of "Old Soldiers who Registered during the Reunion". (I suspect that this reunion was held in Buffalo, MO.)

I hope this helps. By the way, do you know of any way one can obtain access to copies of the Buffalo Reflex?

I've been looking at the group photo you have with great interest. I notice you refer to the Aug. 23, 1894, reunion of Co., I, 16th MO Cavalry, as described on page 389 of "Dallas County Missouri History", suggesting the possibility that this group photo is from the reunion. I think you might be onto something! Note that there are 32 names of attendees in the book, and that the photo is of 33 men. As for obtaining copies of the Buffalo Reflex, microfilms of some Dallas county newspapers are available from the State Historical Society of Missouri. See http://www.system.missouri.edu/shs/  The Newspaper library web page is http://www.system.missouri.edu/shs/newspaper.html

The list of papers and dates available used to be on the Dallas MOGenWeb site, but I recently received an email from the "Sr.Reference Specialist of the Newspaper Library", claiming that it came from a book they publish of all Missouri newpapers (that they apparently want to sell you for $14 just to see if a microfilm of a paper covering the date you want is available.) This person objected to the small list of Dallas County papers being on the site. (It was on the site before I inherited it.) Frankly, I believe that the small excerpt was well within the bounds of fair use, and that in no way would the list deny the SHSM any revenue. In fact, to the contrary I believe the list actually benefits the SHSM by informing people what they have available. But I pulled it from the page for now, and suggest that since they have chosen to be so stingy, you contact them directly to find out what issues they have on microfilm for the period in which you are interested.

Who does the book say were the attendees? (ref 1894 reunion above - a possible match for the picture)

My GG Grandfather Ruben McCord Fullerton was at the reunion. The only men in the photo that look remotely like him is the man 3rd from the left in the back row, and 2nd from the right in the back row... But his face is partially obscured. Supposedly his brother, Gideon Dodson Fullerton is there too, but I have no photos of him to go by. Ruben Fullerton was a Sargent at 20 years of age. I know this is no help, but thought I would go ahead and throw this out...Susan Elliott Goodwin

OK, team, I'll throw this in, but it's just a guess... My great-grandfather, John T. Morgan might be the gentleman in the top row, far right, who appeared in his shirt and suspenders, without a jacket... The Morgan family resemblance is pretty strong, still, in his great-great-grandsons... I'll pass the picture along to some of the other Morgan descendents... David, thank you so much for posting this picture! I have none of my grandmother, his daughter Fannie; I can wait for a positive ID on him...Makes me wonder what other treasures are tucked away!

>>After much consideration, and after comparing the photo that I have of my GG Grandfather Ruben Fullerton with the reunion photo (as well as having my parents and daughter put their 2 cents in) we have all come to the same conclusion...that the man in the back row, 3rd from the left is he....and that very likely, the man standing to his right is his brother, Gideon D. Fullerton. Let's see if we can't try and find some more! Susan Elliott Goodwin bmbrstrget@aol.com

>>Off hand just by looking and comparing a few pictures I would say RR Fraker (ggggrandfather) is the fourth one squatting in the front row. Patti S. patty@knoxnet.net

>>James Yates is on 2nd row fourth from right, white hair and beard. LMaples ldmaples@gte.net
