This will be the last time many of these people have been found to appear in a census (so far)

1

Abner Long

56 M NC While this census states NC, the preceding census will state SC. Abner will pass away in the next few years for unknown reasons. Possibly related to the outbreak of the Civil War.
Mary

Polly (Mary) is supposed to have left Missouri with at least one grandchild (#10102) after Abner died and the Civil War outbreak and moved to Freeport, Illinos. A story states that when the grandchild (#10102) entered Illinois, flags were at half mast because Lincoln had died. This would have put the move after the Civil War's completion in 1865. There is reason to believe Abner died early in or before the outbreak of war in 1861 and that she spent some time in Rolla before this move to Illinois. She died there with no records found to date.
102 John

William originally joined the 24th MO Infantry with his older brother.  He deserted that winter, but while Joseph Calvin went to SW Missouri to assist his family prepare for winter and then returned to duty, William did not. Later, he joined the 1st Arkansas Cavalry Company I in August of 1862. He was possibly involved in the Battle of Prarie Grove, AR in December of 1862, and deserted again the following February. We will refer to some of the wild stories of William "Bud" Long later.

In 1850, Samuel Edden was living with James M Henry in Carroll County, AR in Carrolton Township #133. In 1860, he is listed as a well digger living in Stone County, MO with John Riddle in the Williams Township #335, just a few houses from Elizabeth.

With his brothers John and William he should have been engaged in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas in Decemeber of 1862. He deserted with his brother William in February of 1863. In 1864 till the end of the war, he served with the 2nd MO Light Artillery. According to his grandnephew's narrative, he served as the gun's ## man. He married Martha Hobbs in Berryville, Arkansas on August 18, 1873.

IL

Joseph "Calvin" Long joined the 24th MO Volunteer Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War. He died in March of 1862 in Cassville, Missouri as his regiment was enroute to the Battle of Pea Ridge.
Elizabeth

17

F

MO This is actually Joseph's 2nd wife, Elizabeth Hatfield, whom he married abt 1859. His first two children were born to his first wife, Elizabeth Retina Bobbitt, daughter of James and Martha. He married "Retina" October 14, 1852. While giving birth to John Henry Long on December 15, 1858, she died. John Henry Long was nursed by Retina's, older sister, Sarah Bobbitt, who was married to Mr. John Henry (thus where he got his name). Mr John Henry and his wife lived in Carroll County, AR in 1860 with their son George, and Sarah's brother. Mr John Henry would himself died during the Civil War. Elizabeth Hatfield's parents, Arabia and Rebecca can be found next door.

Joseph

KY

A Joseph Long bought land in Stone County, Missouri on 4/15/1853 80 acres 21N Township 24w Fract Sect N NESW. Since there were no other Long's in Stone County, Missouri except the Abner Long family, it is assumed this land purchase was made by this Joseph. It is possible that (#101) could have made the purchase, but his age makes its doubtful. Note that Joseph and Elizabeth's last 3 children are all born in Missouri, even though they once again appear in the Carroll County, Arkansas census in both 1850 and 1860. It is strongly believed, based on neighbors in census', that Abner and his son are living on Joseph's land, or purchasing it from him, which he will reclaim after both Abner and his eldest son die before the next census.

Using Henry family info to number children. John Henry was the oldest child of George Henry & Sallie Jones. There is also reason to believe that all but the last 3 of John Henry's children were by a first wife, a Burnett.
